I would like to find head to head comparisons of Abilify (Bristol
Meyers Squibb) vs it competitors. Namely: Geodon, Seroqul, Zyprexa,
and Resperidol. I would like articles which give as unbiased (can be
controversal) information as possible. I would like information on
side effects such as diabetes and weight gain. Also on cognitive
abilities. thanks

Hello - there are no head-to-head comparisons of Abilify with either
Geodon or Seroquel. Zyprexa has only been compared indirectly.
Risperidol and Haldol have been tested head-to-head with Abilify,
showing comparable efficacy. Abilify has been shown in many studies
to lead to small weight gains (around 1.5 pounds). Abilify has not
been shown to effect glucose handling. The reported incidence of
undesireable motor effects is much lower than with typical
anti-psychotics (such as haldol, risperdol). Somnolence (sleepiness)
is not reported to be a side-effect of Abilify. The articles that are
available are listed below.

Abilify vs. Haldol and placebo - both Abilify and Haldol showed
resolution of symptoms without changes in body weight. Abilify had
lower rates of EPS (extrapyramidal symptoms - abnormal muscle
movements):

A review suggesting that Abilify is as effective as Haldol or
Risperdal without evidence of weight gain, EPS, or impaired glucose
tolerance (an inability to properly handle glucose, similar to type II
diabetes):
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12587943&dopt=Abstract

Another review suggesting that Abilify may be associated with a low
rate of weight gain:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12472374&dopt=Abstract

A review of all available clinical trial data for side effects
suggests an average weight gain of 0.71 kg over four to six weeks
without any significant effect upon glucose handling or somnolence:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12729864&dopt=Abstract

In a study of patients taking Haloperidol, Thioridazine, Olanzapine,
or Risperidone who were switched to Abilify, symptoms were found to
improve with a reduction in weight gain, less somnolence, and
decreased EPS (no breakdown by drug is given, however):
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12610718&dopt=Abstract

Less weight gain than Zyprexa:

There appears to be no evidence for abilify increasing the risk of
diabetes:

Abilify appears to have no effect on the "QC interval" of the cardiac
rhythm, which Geodon has been associated with:
