Hi clare,
I think in The Matrix, Morpheus told Neo that he was unsure of the
current year (only circa 100 years after 1999). Knowing that The
Matrix Reloaded was set 6 months after the end of The Matrix wouldn't
help us much.

It's worse than that; in Matrix Reloaded, the System Architect makes a claim
that the Matrix has been reloaded not just once but many times. I think he
claims 5 or 6 times.
<p>
To say nothing, of course, of that business at the end with Neo affecting
things in the "real" world. Did he step into another Matrix set up for him
by the System Architect, or was he already in another Matrix when he was
first pulled out into the "real world?" Perhaps in the third movie we'll
find out this all took place on the holodeck of the Enterprise D. Seriously,
there's too much ambiguity about what "reality" is at this point in the
series to answer the question definitively, I think.

In The Matrix, Morpheus says: "You believe the year is 1997 when in
fact it is much closer to 2197. I can't say for certain what year it
is because we honestly do not know."
