Where could I rent a pig for a few hours for a child's birthday party
in the Philadelphia area? Please don't just say, "call farms," I don't
want to have to explain this over and over to people who have never
considered the concept. I'm hoping for something like a petting zoo
that makes house calls.

Hi there!

I've sent out a bunch of emails to places that offer the service you
are looking for, to confirm that a) they have a pig and b) they cover
the Philly area.

Two quick questions in case they need follow up -- 

1 -- Can you narrow down your location a bit? Some of these places are
in NJ and others are in PA. It may make a difference which side of
Philly you're on.

2 -- Would a Pot Belly pig be alright? Or does it have to be a "real"
pig?

Thanks for continuing to work this. Exploring several of the links
you're looking at reminds me to mention this: I don't want or need a
"mobile petting zoo." I don't want to spend $300-$400 on ponies,
chickens, etc. My daughter loves pigs and she's having a backyard
party and I just need a pig and a pigsitter to come hang out for a few
hours. $100 would be the most I would pay for this.

Ok, I have found at least one pig for sure and a couple of other good
possibilities. Obviously, I can't negotiate price because that would
involve knowing your address, date of the party, and such, so I'll
leave that part to you. Also, I wouldn't rule out calling the
"traveling zoo" type places. They would probably be willing to bring
just the pig if they have one.

entire petting zoo which would include a pig.

I also had another thought. If you were to call the Cooperative
Extension office for you area, you might find that there is a 4-H
member who has a pig and would be happy to make a few dollars bringing
it to a birthday party.  For example, I use to run a 4-H club for kids
with pets and we often got calls asking us to bring dogs and rabbits
and kittens to nursing homes, special care facilities, and child
centers.
