Dear smmeyers-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.
This poetic quote is attributed to Elizabeth Stevens Brown, a highly
regarded, early 20th century teacher for whom a school is named in
Swansea, MA:
"Whatever you are, be noble.
Whatever you do, do well.
Whenever you speak, speak kindly.
Bring joy wherever you dwell."
- Elizabeth Stevens Brown
Miss Elizabeth Stevens Brown, daughter of a coachman for the Frank S.
Stevens family, was born on December 17, 1879. Miss Brown began
teaching in 1901 as a Primary room teacher, in a two-room wooden
schoolhouse not far from where the school sits today. In 1910 Miss
Brown moved her class to the newly completed Stevens School, where she
taught the intermediate grades, and in 1932 became the principal. Miss
Brown was a person of strong characteristics. Throughout her life
Miss Brown respected the dignity and worth of the individual. She
strived to develop each of her pupils to the greatest use of their
capabilities.
