What is the current average (or median) annual salary for a corporate
video producer in the San Francisco bay area? The only thing I have
found is at http://www.avvideo.com/2001/12_dec/features/salarysurvey2001.htm.
That information is old and it doesn't break down the salaries by
region
of the country. I know there is similar survey by another trade
(video, multimedia) magazine, but I can't find it. I am negotiating a
salary for a job as a producer in the media (A/V) department of a
large corporation and I
need this info as soon as possible. Any information on fringe benefits
(retirement plans, vacation, stock options, health insurance, etc.)
would also be helpful. If you can follow up with me privately, I will
tell you the name of the corporation I am interviewing with.

Hello -

I found median salary info with this job description:

"Coordinates various aspects of production such as script writing,
audio, camera work, music, etc. Responsibilities also include
overseeing the work of support staff and ensuring program scripts meet
intentions and requirements expressed by management. Requires a
bachelor's degree with at least 2-4 years of experience in the field.
Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and
procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish
goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A wide degree of creativity and
latitude is expected. Typically reports to department head."

Will this work?

<Video producers in California are paid at a higher rate than the
national average. According to California’s employment development
department, the average wage for producers in California in 2002 was
$88,618.00.
http://www.calmis.cahwnet.gov/file/occup$/oeswages/Cal$oes2002.htm#Service

An individual’s salary will depend on qualifications, talent,
experience and the size of the company.

Producers in California earn $40 - $150 per hour depending on the
project and skills of the specialists.
http://www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/oir/oops/video_producers.htm

The figures that you found in the AV survey appear to be comparable
with the national averages which are lower than in California.

The U.S. Department of Labor provides national statistics of wage
estimates. The average, national, annual wage for a video producer in
2001 was $57,160.00 http://www.bls.gov/oes/2001/oes272012.htm The
percentile figures also show that 10% of producers earnt less than
$22.810, 25 percent earnt less than $31,390, 50 percent earnt less
than $45,090, 75 percent earnt less than $70,540 and 90 percent earnt
less than $140,070.

A study by the New Media Consortium in 2002 gives information about
the salaries paid to those working in video production or editing for
multimedia or the web in U.S. colleges. The minimum salary was $33,000,
the maximum salary was $68,000 and the average was $42,313.33.

Occupational wage data
http://www.calmis.cahwnet.gov/htmlfile/subject/occup$.htm

Various occupations were studied over a three year period. For example
a comparison of local wage areas for multi media specialists is shown
at http://www.calmis.cahwnet.gov/file/occup$/CCOISWages/DCLAW.CFM?OCCUPATION_CODE=030064996

Other video production jobs are paid at higher rates than the national
average in California. For example film and video editors earn an
average salary of $43,669 in California which is above the national
average of $42,010 http://www.calmis.cahwnet.gov/file/occguide/Filmedtr.htm

The Connecticut Business and Industry Association gives the current
average wages for video producers as $24,000 - $50,000. Again this
compares to the national average.

Salaries of $25,000 - $60,000 depending on experience, nature of the
work and size of the company.

The $88,618 figure seems to be for "producers" in general, which could
refer to all kinds of motion pictures, and not corporate work. The
rest of the figures are all national, and therefore not pertinent.

<A study comparing regional wages to the national average shows that
pay in San Francisco is 119% of the national average. Using the figure
of $57,160 in the government survey gives a salary of $68, 020 when
adjusted for San Francisco.
http://www.culpepper.com/eBulletin/2002/AugustCompensationArticle.asp

This seems to be comparable to positions in the area. A position of
video producer offered by City of Foster City pays $4265 - $5184 per
month, or $51,180 - $62,208 per year. Foster City is located 25 miles
south of San Franciso. This position requires three years experience.
http://www.fostercity.org/Employment/jobclass/Video-Producer.cfm

Although this gives an average rate of pay for video producers most
jobs are open to negotiation. >

Thanks for that. Is there any way in Google Answers that I can also
get " jbf777-ga" to also post their answer? The info in their point of
clarification above was right on.

<Researchers are encouraged to post comments if they have information
that can supplement an answer.
I have looked at the site suggested by jbf777-ga and it is also
national information which gives a
base salary for a producer of $37,922 with a range of salaries between
$30,328 and $47,504. This is lower than the average given in both the
government survey and the AV survey. If these figures are then
adjusted by 119% to take account of the greater pay in San Francisco a
salary of between $35,983 - $56,529 results which is still below the
government average. It is also possible to order a personalised job
valuation reports but there is a charge from $22 for each report.
