I need a contact list (name, email, address, publication) of editors
and freelance writers that write and work for small business magazines
and newspapers. We have a revolutionary service for small businesses
and wanted to send a media kit to everyone who writes about small
businesses, home businesses, and sales professionals. Where can I find
such a list? Can you give me some starting points?

Are you looking for a list of freelance business editors and writers
for any particular state or in the United States?

There isn't a list of "all writers" anywhere, as many of these
individuals work only with one particular publication. How many names
are you looking for?

<There are two publications that list details of all magazines and
newspapers these are Willings Press Guide and Benn’s Media Directory.

Willings Press Guide

The online version of Willings Press Guide will give you the lists
that you need.

At the Willlings Press Guide site you can sign up for a free 24 hour
trial of their site. You need to complete a form giving address and
business details. After submitting the form a security code will be
sent to your email address.

There are three sections each covering a part of the world. Performing
a search for business in the periodicals and Magazines, World section
will give details of over 600 business related magazines. Clicking on
each link gives the name of the editor, the editorial address, website
and content information. A search for small business gives details of
59 publications.

Benn’s Media Directory
Benn’s Media Directory costs $200 per issue. There are three volumes
each covering a section of the world.

Willings press and Benn's media directory only list basic info about
publications. I want contact information for edits and writers. This
isn't helpful. Please advise.

< A mailing list of magazine editors can be purchased at
http://search.alcdata.com/market?page=research/datacard&id=56839
prices are from $66 the list includes 500 business editors.

Alternatively contact info can be extracted from the list of email
addresses for newspapers and magazines at
http://www.webcom.com/~leavitt/medialist.html

Media contact lists can also be purchased at
http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-html-editor/2001JulSep/0388.html

There are also press release services that will send your release to
all relevant media. For example this service costs $350
http://submitexpress.com/press_release.html

The Internet News Bureau distributes press releases for $275.00
https://ssl.internet.com/INB/orderpr.cgi

Send 2 Press offers press release distribution from $69
http://www.send2press.com/

You can compile your own lists by using the press guides as a starting
point. They give the web site addresses of the magazines. If you go to
the home page of a magazine and then to the contact page or press
page you will find contact information for the editors and staff
writers.
For example the contact page for Fortune Small Business
http://www.fortune.com/fortune/information/Presscenter/0,,contacts,00.html
gives email addresses and telephone numbers for the staff. It also
tells you that you should contact Caroline Plauche or Jenna Laundry to
arrange an interview with a writer or the editor. At
http://www.fortune.com/fortune/information/edit-bios there is a list
of the staff writers with links to their biographies. For example by
following the link to Chrisine Chen
http://www.fortune.com/fortune/information/edit-bio/0,16267,12,00.html
you find that she focuses on the technology telecommunications and
media industries.

There are also other directories of small business magazines on the
web that are the starting point for extracting this information. For
example a search for “small business magazines”
will find the following site
http://newsdirectory.com/news/magazine/business/smallbus/ which lists
27 small business magazines.

Going to the home page
http://newsdirectory.com/go/?f=&r=sma&u=www.entrepreneurmag.com
and then the contact page for entrepreneur magazine
http://newsdirectory.com/go/?f=&r=sma&u=www.entrepreneurmag.com you
will find that all story ideas should be sent to Karen Spaeder
ksspaeder@entrepreneur.com
If you want to contact any of the freelance writers then you should
email them at entmag@entrepreneur.com The page also provides contact
information for the staff writers that deal with individual sections
of the magazine. >
