I have been spammed (Is 'spammed' the word? -- it happens on MS IE,
not email) by a site identifying itself as 'smokeandpancakes.org' (or
is it
'smokeandpancake.org'?) repeatedly (20 times) seeking to download some
unknown program to my computer. I wonder when we will hear if this is
a virus, or something more benign. Is there a link where I can learn
about this?

Hello deedub,

The domain "smokeandpancake.org" is not a valid domain.
http://www-whois.internic.net/cgi/whois?whois_nic=smokeandpancake.org&type=domain

You could still have a virus/website/trojan that is misrepresenting
itself with a random string (so that one can not find out what the
problem is).

I am going to try to help you figure out what this is, and hopefully
you will be able to remove it.

First, do you have any virus scan software installed? You Should!!! If
yes, update your virus scan software and do a full scan of your
hardrive. If no, then I want you to put it on your shopping list and
in the meantime, you can do a free virus check at:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Chances are that this is not a virus/trojan but some piece of spyware
that came with an application you installed, (or a script that ran in
your browser). If the virus scan turns up clean (and even if it
detects and removes viruses) you should download and install this
program to detect Spyware:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Here are some links to download AdAware:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306

Before you do the scan, use the AUTOUPDATE feature within this
software to get the latest version of the detection file.

Hopefully, one of these will show you what this nasty software is. In
that case, it would be able to tell you what it is also. If you do not
find out what it is from this answer, I am not sure what else I can do
for you. I have already exceeded what is normal for a $2.50 question.
However, if you need any clarifications, please let me know and I will
see what I can do for you.

Search Strategy:

searched for the website (came up with nothing)
decided that this was probably adware/spyware and listed good
downloads to combat this.
