I have been contacted by a major book publisher who wishes to use a
photo that I took on the cover of an upcoming book. I'm not a
professional photographer, and I've never had to deal with anything
like this, so I have no idea how much of a fee to expect for the
rights to my photo. Can you give me a ballpark figure? Is there a
'going rate' for photo rights? It's a science book, probably not a
huge circulation, but the publisher is major, and I assume it would
involve international distribution. I could give you the publisher
and author if that would help, (but should probably do that
privately).

Thank you!

Greetings Kevinht:

Since it is not possible to send private information to a Researcher,
I hope that the figures I'm providing below will be comprehensive
enough for you to ascertain what you would charge for your photograph.
However, you should query back the publisher and ask about the size
of the run, the size of the photo, etc. because those seem to figure
into a fee.

At http://www.humanistic-photography.com/pricing_HT/pr_stock35.htm I
discovered a stock photography list. As you will see, the
photogtapher states that the fees are based on "one-time english
language rights in north america." The chart will not reprint here so
please visit the URL.

Another site, a Canadian one at http://www.nwpw.com/pricing.php,
offers digital files of photos and their fees. The text states in
part "All prices are based on one-time non-exclusive print use with a
maximum print run of 25,000 copies OR one-time non-exclusive
electronic use for 6 months. Images may not be used in items for
resale without written permission." The chart below shows different
pricing. It does not reference "cover photos" - this is just a stock
photo price list but it will give you another reference.

File Size | Size in Inches | Pixel Dimensions | *Price
(CDN $)
1.5 MB 2 x 3 inches @ 300 dpi 600 x 900 pixels $150.00
3.5 MB 3 x 4.5 inches @ 300 dpi 900 x 1350 pixels $250.00
6.0 MB 4 x 6 inches @ 300 dpi 1200 x 1820 pixels $350.00
10 MB 5 x 7 inches @ 300 dpi 1500 x 2280 pixels $450.00
14 MB 6 x 9 inches @ 300 dpi 1800 x 2700 pixels $550.00
25 MB 8 x 12 inches @ 300 dpi 2400 x 3654 pixels $700.00

At http://www.pcimagenetwork.com/perks/com.htm you'll find the
commercial rates of Brad Perks where he offers the a royalty free
price list. Again, the chart wouldn't print so please visit his fees
URL at http://www.pcimagenetwork.com/light/free.htm. Fees are $29 to
$500.

Also you may want to query a firm like the one at
http://www.illuminationgraphics.com/bookcoverdesign/ and ask what they
would charge for a cover photo for a science book. Ask for academic
cover photo, textbook cover photo and non-fiction cover photo prices.

At http://media.gn.apc.org/rates/photobk.html (a UK based site) the
following is listed in their chart:

"Macmillian Publishers single photo for cover image Book Right,
Britain _Holtzb 2002 700 [pounds]" and "Bloomsbury Photo per pic FBS
cover image no expense 2002 350 [pounds]"

The site also lists "Open University use of 1 photo in academic book
_HMG 2002 75 [pounds]" While that does not apply to a cover, it may
give you some idea of an academic photo. Their site also references
the National Union of Journalists
(http://media.gn.apc.org/flindex.html) and you may want to visit
there. They offer many good articles for photojournalists.

**********

I hope I have provided enough information for you to determine what
you will charge. If I were you, I would also consider querying the
publisher and ask what they normally pay for a cover photo. I also
located standard photographer contracts at the following URLs:

http://www.corbis.com/corporate/us/photographers/contract_contract.asp

http://www.creativeworksphotographywriting.com/cwpwcontracts/General%20Photography%20Contract%20html.htm

Reviewing those may help prepare you for the contract that the book
publisher will offer.

Should you require clarification of any of the links or information I
have provided, please request it and I will be happy to respond.
