Hello 1iniru2 and thank you for your question.

The climber in question is Aron Ralston age 27.

"Climber Who Cut Off Arm Describes Ordeal"
"Ralston, 27, was climbing alone April 26 when his right arm became
pinned beneath an 800-pound boulder in Canyonlands National Park near
Moab, Utah. After failed attempts, he freed himself on the fifth day
by snapping his bones and using a knife to cut through his arm.

He applied a tourniquet, walked through a narrow canyon, rappelled
down a 60-foot cliff and walked six miles before seeing tourists who
flagged down a helicopter."

As the mother of two aspiring climbers, I've followed Aron Ralston's
story with great interest. I check the latest on Ralston, his family,
and his recovery by entering "Aron Ralston" into the Google News
search window every week or so.

Recently he spoke to young teenagers at the middle school he attended
several years ago; a link to the transcript is below. Except for the
usual "this experience has clarified my purpose in life" sort of
comments, he avoids sensationalizing and milking the emotional
elements of the story, and uses some effective techniques to make
meaningful points about hero worship, freedom and responsibility,
respect for others, and learning from your mistakes.
