Hello markbard:

Thanks for the challenging question. I searched high and low for you
but I was only able to come up with one page that had a percentage of
U.S. doctors taking part in clinical trials. I was not able to find
any other information to back this up. Please let me know if one piece
of information (from a reputable source) will be enough for you.

Thanks.

A percentage from a reputable source (included in the answer) would be
fine - thanks.

Hi markbeard:

My apologies. While I was writing up the answer for you, I realized
that the percentage (20%) that it mentioned was for doctors at a
specific university, not through the U.S. I don't know how I didn't
realize that before - it must have been a long day.

I'm very sorry for the confusion - I hope someone else can help you
find the information you need. I'll make sure my fellow researcher
know you still need some help.

OK - anyone else have an answer? I need the number of physicians in
the U.S. participating in clinical trials - stated as...

XX% of physicians or XX,XXX physicians

Hi, markbard-ga:

I'd like to try to answer question. By "participate" do you mean only
doctors who set the protocols for the trials? who conduct the trials
by supervising or providing treatments? or, in some cases, who are
volunteer subjects in trials?

What counts as a clinical trial? Are you only interested in FDA
sanctioned trials for medical devices and/or medicines? If so, is
there a restriction on the "phase" of such trials? Or would any
"clinical trial" sanctioned by a hospital, university, or other
recognized institution count? Or would you include studies being
conducted by individual doctors in their private practices?

Thanks in advance, mathtalk-ga

Well, I gave it a shot ... and no joy.

The best I could do is find the number of physicians involved in
National Cancer Institute sponsored trials. Sorry.
