I am interested in any product or brand that appeals to as many senses
as possible. For example, has taste been part of any product's
identity apart from food? Have the olfactory nerves ever been called
up to sell anything other than perfume? Inother words, I'm interested
in products that create an identity based on how they smell, or how
they taste, or how they sound, look or feel.

Hi lynnes.

Well, I was all set to post a quick comment to your question, when I
realized I could just as easily come up with enough information to
post an answer. Take a look at the list I've compile below, and then
read my comments at the end.

==========
WINE
==========

My first reaction to your question was wine – aside from all of the
subtle tastes and scents, wine is judged on "body" which is the
texture and weight of wine as felt in the mouth. Also beyond the basic
"red with meat, white with chicken rule," the color of wine is
significant. As wine ages, its color changes; red wines fade toward
brick orange and/or pink, and white wines become golden. Even the
sound of wine is important – not really the wine itself, but think of
the pop of a champagne cork, a sound that has come to stand for
celebration. Or the sound of pulling a cork and pouring wine into
crystal glasses. They use this in marketing all the time (even more
for beer than for wine) and use it to set scenes in movies as well.
The sound of corks being pulled and wine being poured gives us a sense
of the ambiance of the restaurant or meal being shown.

POTATO CHIPS
==============

On the opposite side of the food chart from wine, are potato chips
–again flavor, color, and scent being important – but also chips are
processed carefully so that they have "mouth appeal" – the "snapping"
both physically and audibly and their size is perfected to fit our
mouths "just right."

Here's an interesting article about that –

"Texture affects all five senses during product consumption. Precisely
how texture does this can be identified and studied using the Spectrum
descriptive analysis method, which is described in "Putting Mouthfeel
into Words" in the August 1992 issue of Food Product Design. In brief,
the Spectrum analysis breaks down the eating experience
chronologically and describes the textural sensory experience at each
of seven steps."

HOUSES
============

Any realtor worth his or her salt will tell you how to make your house
appeal to potential buyers by taking advantage of all 5 senses.

Of course you have to have the "curb appeal" which is how your house
looks. Realtors and home design specialists also recommend that soft
classical music or some other calming sound be playing while buyers
roam through the house. Additionally, the scent of baking bread or
coffee are recommended to make buyers feel "at home" and many home
sellers leave "homey" foods such as warm cookies out for potential
buyers.

"Make your house appeal to all five senses as much as it can.
Consider the sound level. Stop your dishwasher or clothes dryer in
mid-cycle and check for other noisy appliances. Leave your stereo set
on, play neutral easy-listening music very softly…"

 " Thus stagers often use what is at hand to enhance the potential of
the home to make it centre stage in a market that demands value. These
are just some of the many ways staging works to evoke emotions and all
five senses that ultimately make for a good offer."

RESTAURANTS
================

Very much the same as the above. The look, the smell, the taste of the
food, the décor, the ambient music, all make a restaurant dining
experience that appeals to all 5 senses.

This is important, not just for fine dining, but also for fast food.
Consider the color and visual brand recognition associated with
McDonalds or Pizza Hut. Kids recognize the looks of these places long
before they can read the names on the building. And, the smell of
French fries will make any child (or adult for that matter) suddenly
hungry.

SHAMPOOS AND BEAUTY PRODUCTS
==================================

" Should beauty product packaging be more than just beautiful? Should
it appeal to more than just the eye? Some cosmetic, fragrance, and
personal care products marketers are beginning to think so. They are
trying package designs that stimulate other senses, like touch, smell,
and sound."

"… "By bathing all five senses in a shower of pleasant stimuli, you
can create a positive cycle in the mind-body linkage." Since
Shiseido's packaging is both visually and tactilely pleasing, the
packaging stimulates the senses almost as much as the product
formulation does…."

APPLES (and other fruits and vegetables)
==============================

Again, the taste and scent are obvious, but mouth feel, color, surface
texture and even size are important when we evaluate apples and other
fresh fruits and vegetables. New apple varieties for example have to
be tested on all of those points before they can be successfully
marketed to consumers.

Final thoughts –

I suppose, in the strictest sense, the sense of taste can really only
be attached to food items. You really can't "taste" a new home or a
shampoo. But, the fact that a shampoo is "flavored" with, say an apple
scent, is what creates the appeal. So, I would say that we "perceive"
a taste that goes with the product even though we don't technically
taste it.

This also means that the best way to find products that really appeal
to all five senses in that strict sense, is to start with food. The
marketing and appeal of any food is going to be based all of the five
senses.

Think about it – not only do we taste and smell food, but how it looks
is extremely important. We can judge freshness or ripeness or doneness
by color. We know when the meat "looks funny." We squeeze the melons
and smell them to see if they're ripe yet. Even more so, our sense of
feel is engaged the minute we put something into our mouths. We know
what is suppose to go "crunch" and what is suppose to be smooth.
People quickly spit out anything that doesn't have the right feel and
even reject food that they know feels funny in their mouths –
regardless of taste. Two common examples you see with kids all the
time are are tapioca pudding (has lumps!) and cooked mushrooms
(slimy!).

So, most foods are marketed to appeal to all of our senses. Imagine a
commercial for prime beef. First they show you the big thick juicy
steak, then you hear the sound of it going onto the grill, you see the
smoke rise and can almost smell it (cue the child – "mmm… that smells
yummy!" … and then it's served to a family that eagerly devours it.

Beer is marketed the same way .. the sound and sight of it pouring,
golden brown into the mug, the foam rising (texture) and the man
drinking it down.

So, I think we've put together a pretty comprehensive list of products
or brands that appeal and are marketed to all five senses.

If anything I've said isn't clear or if any of the links don't work,
let me know and I'll be happy to clarify for you.

Thank you for your answers, they were helpful in an area where there's
very little information.I was wondering if you found anything on
electronic products - for example the importance of touch on a
keyboard, or mobile (cell) phone. Has Apple put out anything on this?

I must stress that I'm not interested in any pornography, but another
thing that comes to mind that has not shown up in the results is
perhaps sex toys. Edible underwear? Flavoured condoms?

Ok Lynnes,

Here's a second pass at what's out there –

============================
MUSIC DELIVERY SYSTEMS
============================

"In any electroacoustic music listening situation, the musical space
the listener hears is the
combination of composed space and listening space. The
musical-aesthetic experience has
to do with this resulting perceived space, and depends upon a
successful interaction between
the spaces composed into the work and the space in which the work is
listened to. However,
these are not the only components on which the spatio-aesthetic
experience in music listening
is based. The total spatial experience is quite complex and does not
confine itself solely
to the audible. Visual properties of the listening environment are
influential, equally so is
the absence or presence of other audience members in the listening
situation. Information
picked up by other senses such as vision, smell and touch can affect
the listener’s ability to
attend to the music in a concentrated manner, and may underline or
contradict spatial cues
composed into the musical work." [p 111]

"Telecommunications journalist Kamio Hisashi observes that people
treat camera phones differently than they do regular cameras. With the

not so with camera phones. "It's an attempt by manufacturers of

COMPUTERS / VIRTUAL REALITY
============================

" Dix et al. [1] describe how the majority of interactive computer
systems are completely visual in nature, offering rudimentary audio
support. …most commercial computer systems, however, provide limited
support for two of the other senses, hearing and touch. Systems that
produce a haptic response (the sense of touch) are being used by the
virtual reality (VR) community and joystick manufacturers. For
example, VR users can wear a special type of glove which contains
small inflatable pockets. As the user in the VR world picks up an
object, these pockets fill with air giving the impression that the
user has actually picked up that object. Joystick manufacturers have
developed tactile feedback joysticks which have small motors that move
the joystick depending on the type of feedback required…."

Sex, involves all five senses. So anything that is marketed as a
sexual aid or enhancer is going to appeal to as many senses as
possible. There is advice all over the place for staging sexy (or
romantic) locations – whether the bedroom, an intimate dinner, or even
a vacation spot – for sex. And all of this advice (and marketing
push) is aimed at all five senses.

CLOTH / CLOTHING /FABRIC
==========================

"Fabrics are the medium through which fashions are expressed, trends
are established and interiors are made beautiful. Fabrics are the
lifeblood for many interior design installations, and the reasons for
this all have to do with three of our five senses: sight, sound and
touch, thus making them a sensuous experience."

The above article goes into detail over the sight, sound, and feel of
fabric quite nicely. I would add to their descriptions our sense of
smell. Laundry detergents, fabric softeners, the "spring fresh" smell
of sheets hung on the line; these things all add scent to our overall
perception of fabric.

"By 2029, as a result of continuing trends in miniaturization,
computation, and communication, we will have billions of nanobots --

through the capillaries of our brain communicating directly with our
biological neurons. By taking up positions next to every nerve fiber
coming from all of our senses, the nanobots will provide
full-immersion virtual reality involving all five of the senses. So we
will enter virtual reality environments (via the web, of course) of
our choice and meet people, both real and virtual, only now the
difference won't be so clear."

"Experiential marketing debunks the notion that purchasing decisions
are based solely on rational thought. Humans are both rational and
emotional, and customers use both sides of the brain to make buying
decisions. Experiential marketing advocates a holistic approach to
marketing: how we sense the product (think of the five senses); how we
feel around it; how we care about it and relate to it; what we do with
it and yes, what we think about it (that rational side). This all has
to be stimulated positively to get that purchase made and that
customer-company relationship started."

One product that springs to my mind is shampoo. It is marketed to
appeal by scent [[smell]], the creaminess and thickness of the shampoo
and the lather [[touch]], the color (green for botanticals, golden,
etc.) [[sight]]. They also market the smell and texture of your hair
after use.
