Hello mebs-ga, There have been three coups d'etat in Fiji. Two were led by Lt. Col. Sitiveni Rabuka on May 14, 1987 and September 25, 1987. The third was led by George Speight in May 2000. It appears that each of these coups related to ethnic tensions between ethnic Fijians and Indo-Fijians. "Background Note: Fiji" (Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, May 2002) U.S Department of State http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/1834.htm The current government's official position on ethnic tensions appears to be reflected in its Ministry of National Reconciliation. The very name suggests the position of the government; further details are located on this page: "National Reconciliation" Fiji Government Online http://www.fiji.gov.fj/reconciliation/index.shtml I hope that this information is helpful. - justaskscott-ga Search terms used on Google: fiji fiji history fiji rabuka speight fiji rabuka speight "may 14" "september 25" | |
