I have a violin, marked on the inside Jean Baptiste Marteau a
Mirecourt 1846. I am having trouble finding anything in English. I
know that Mirecourt is a town in France that produced many violin
makers, can you find any info on the maker?

Hi,

Please don't take this the bad way but are you sure it says Marteau?
Because I can't seem to find anything about a Jean-Baptiste Marteau
but found other violin makers called Jean-Baptiste at Mirecourt (I can
read French, so that's not the problem). It could also be that he
isn't one of the more famous makers at Mirecourt, ideally would need
to look at a French book that's on sale, that has a complete history
of violon makers at Mirecourt.

Thanks.

Hi, thanks for your reply, yes, it says Marteau, however there is a .
above the a in marteau. I did find a bibliography of violin makers,
and did not find this name, so I'm thinking this is a lesser known or
not known maker. Thank you for your time

Hi,

Do you mean the 'a' looks like 'å'?

If so, that would indicate some Scandinavian origin.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but if you want, I could call the
violin museum in Mirecourt and ask them about it, but that would run
the risk of them saying that they never heard of him. What do you
think?

Thanks.
