How can the 16th Army of the Tennesse be a Union Army? Dear wellen, I was advised by Google Answers Assistance that we can not tip researches for comments, but that we can post new questions for one researcher only. So I guess this is the proper way to do things in the Google system. Thank you for your comments that have helped me clarify several things in my search to find my great grandfather's military history and pictures. Some of the information saddens me, but I want to know the real truth anyway. It bothers me that my great grandfather fought under General Sherman, an army that waged war mainly on civilians and destroyed the beautiful plantations of the South. On the other hand, if it hadn't been for Sherman's awful tactics, we might not have a united country today and we might have the diabolical blight of slavery still existing in our land. |

Hello barnchild, I'm glad that I was able to help you find a few answers and sincerely appreciate your re-post question to me. In researching ancestors it is exciting to see them 'come to life' as we gain more information about them. I have copied my previous comment as an answer here. "Here is the link to the National Archives where you can request the records that they should have available on your ancestor...which should provide you with more information about his military service. This is not something a researcher can do for you. http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/military/civil_war_records.html#where There is quite a bit online about his units which you have probably already found, but there doesn't seem to be anything about him specifically. I also found this in my searching which explains that the "Army of the Tennessee" does not refer to the state of Tennessee but rather to the Tennessee River. [ http://www.tngennet.org/civilwar/misc/battle.html ]. There was also a Union "Army of the Ohio", "Army of the Cumberland", etc. as found in this article http://civilwar.bluegrass.net/FamousUnits/armyofthetennessee.html ." Thank you again, I'm sure as your research continues you will find more on your ancestor. wellen Google Answers Reseacher |
