My great grandfather, Theodor Ludwig Knaak, was a private of William
Fallowill. He lived in Tennessee when the Civil War began, but he
enlisted with the 11th Missouri Infantry under Brigadier General
Smith. (Through previous questions, I have discovered that Tennessee
supplied soldiers to both Union and Confederate armies, though it was
a Confederate state. I also was informed that the Army of the
Tennessee was a Union army named after the Tennessee River, as
contrasted with the Army of Tennessee which was a Confederate army
named after the State of Tennessee.) My grandfather fought with the
16th Army of the Tennessee under General Sherman. He fought in the
battle of Mobile Bay. I am trying to verify all these isolated facts
and tie them together to get a mental picture of my grandfather's
military experiences. Where can I find information about my
grandfather's role in or the history of the following:
* 11th Missouri Infantry
* Battle of Mobile Bay
* 16th Army of the Tennessee

Dear Journalist,
I think my great grandfather's records must be in Missouri, not
Tennessee. Thank you for your reply.

Greetings Barnchild:

The depth of research involved to answer your question is probably
more than you may have estimated. You might query the McClung
Historical Collection described at
http://web.utk.edu/~kizzer/ethisctr/mcclung.htm - it houses "Military
service records for Tennesseans who served in the War of 1812, the
Cherokee Removal (1838), the Mexican-- American War (1846-1848), and
the Civil War (1861-1865) are available on microfilm. Microfilm of
approximately one-third (surnames A-F) of the Revolutionary War
Pension and Bounty Land Records are available. Confederate pensions
granted by the state of Tennessee are also available on microfilm and
have a recently published index."

I live near enough to Knoxville and could visit the collection on your
behalf however the research on-site would be time consuming and still
may not produce all the information you seek. I do not know what
their cost per hour is for internal research but they may have someone
there who can fill your needs.
