Hello Infopros. I lost track of time and went off on this one and came
up with a bunch of studies and articles that I thought would be of
interest to you. It was harder than expected to find real statistics
on the Internet usage of children. Some of these articles are dated,
but I didn't include any dated before the year 2000. Some of them are
not specificually related to your question, but I thought you might
find them interesting anyways so I included them.
The best one I found was a really comprehensive report called:
Connected to the Future - A report on childrens Internet use from the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting:
A summary can be found here
http://www.cpb.org/programs/pr.php?prn=314
The actual report in PDF format here

And study methodology here

And here's a number of other reports and studies of interest:

I checked out Jupiter which is one of the most well known Internet
demographic/study companies.
Unfortunately they are mostly a pay service which you may or may not
want to pay for. These looked like good reports.
