Question ID: 215381
There is a search engine named-- Alfahras-Palestine Search Engine--
I've noticed that some of the search engines have excluded my site
where this 'new?' search engine has appeared---which they have made it
clear they have added my site in their description. I have not
personally submitted my site to them---they seem to be strickly for
the Muslim/Arab crowd. I don't mind if they do---but I mind if it
removes my site from standing alone on the search engine results page.
How can they do this---and how can I go about having that changed?
Thank you

Can a website move into your spot on a search result page by cheating?
I really don't know too much about how this all works.
My site is The Palestine Name located at hyyp://palestinename.com
The Site that I am questioning is Alfahras-Palestine Search Engine
located at http://www.alfahras.cc/default.asp
Could this be spam? Maybe it's not---and then I will feel very guilty
for thinking such a thing. It just seems weird that my website was in
the number one spot at Google and Yahoo---now this sight is
there---featuring my site in their description---and my site has
disappeared. I would appreciate any help in understanding what has
happened. I must admit also---that I am not even a novice when it
comes to understanding all of the technology. I hope I gave enough
information so that you can get to the bottom of this for me.
Thank you

we0905,

When did you first register this URL?

According to the "whois" record for this Domain Name, it was
registered by someone (with an obviously fake name) on April 10, 2003.
http://www.betterwhois.com/complete.cgi?domain=palestinename.com&regwhois=whois.networksolutions.com&key=369099

Is it possible that your registration on this domain expired and you
failed to renew it in time?

Beth,

Have you changed the layout of your site recently?

Thank you for removing my e-mail address---I hadn't realized that it
could be viewed by anyone else.
I haven't chnaged the layout-- but have changed a few things such as
different colors for the scrollbars. I have moved the meta tags
around. (I'm not even sure if that mattered---I just thought the oder
that I changed them to might be better for search engines---making the
title, desription and keword tags first.

I did forget to mention---I did add some keywords that I thought were
vital to the content on my website.

Beth,

After looking around, it's still not clear to me why you think that
http://www.alfahras.cc/default.asp
has *anything* to do with your site.
Can you explain to me why you have that impression?

Thanks,

Beth,

While the http://www.alfahras.cc/default.asp page has a Page Rank of 0
and it *does* link to your site, I really don't think that that is
your problem. You should probably e-mail their webmaster and ask them
if they will remove the link to their site, but you will want to
concentrate your efforts on your own site.

The reason I asked if you had changed the layout of your site recently
is because, as it currently exists, your website is all but invisible
to Google and many other Search Engines.

So that you can better understand what I mean, let's run your site
through the Search Engine Spider Simulator at Search Engine World.
http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/sim_spider.cgi

This simulator shows something similar to what the Googlebot sees when
it indexes your site:
------------------------------------------------
 Spider title
The Palestine Name

 Spider meta desc
The Bible gives end time prophecies concerning Palestine. The Koran
never mentions the name Palestine

 Spider meta keywords
Palestine, Palestine Name, Koran, Bible Verses Koran, Christian,
Authorized King James Bible, Watch World News, World Court, United
Nations, Laws, Intolerance, End Times, Prophecies, Religion

 Spider Text
   Authorized King James Bible
The Lord Spoke
True Christian
World Court
Bible verses Koran
Palestine Name
Intolerance Laws
End Times
Watch!
World News
The Anti-Christ

 Spidered Links
= spider this link with current settings.
= keyword density analyze this link.
 Link
------------------------------------------------

Most major Search Engines **no longer use** the <meta> keywords and
description to determine relevance because of attempts by webmasters
to "cheat" by "spamming" these fields with hundreds of irrelevant
words. What the Search Engines *DO* use is the website text, and as
you can see, your main page contains very little text.

Furthermore, because all your links to subpages are buried in java
applets, Search Engines just CAN'T SEE THEM.

So if the Googlebot and other Search Engine Spiders stop by your site,
they'll see very little text, no links, and figure that that's all
there is. They won't index your site, and they may not even come back
the next time around.

Another possible problem:
When I first visited your site this morning, I got a very generic page
that said something like "this page is under construction". This
evening, I was able to view your site, but your banner title appeared
as a little box with a red "X" (the picture wasn't found). Now I am
able to see the whole page, but I can't see the little oval buttons
any more, and when I click on the links to your subpages, I get "The
page cannot be found".

What this tells me is that there may be some problems with your domain
host having your site consistently up and available. However, if the
Googlebot or other Search Spider comes by and your website is not up,
it may remove your site from its index and not come back. Therefore,
it's a good idea to check your website once a day if you can, to make
sure that it's not consistently unavailable. If it appears that there
is a real problem, you're going to have to "have words" with your
hosting company, or change to a hosting company that is more reliable.

Okay, so here's what you need to do to make your site more friendly to
Search Engines:

1) Add a couple of meaty paragraphs (consisting of complete, correct
English sentences) to your front page describing the purpose of your
website. All those keywords you listed in your <meta> tags? Be sure
that at least the most important of them is included 2 or 3 times in
your paragraphs.

2) Get rid of the applet links. Make your subpage links regular html
hyperlinks. For example:
<a href="http://palestinename.com/wcourt.htm">World Court</a>

3) Page Titles - Create a separate, descriptive page title for each
page. For instance, rather than
<title>The Palestine Name</title>
for your main page, turn it into a sentence beginning "The Palestine
Name - " and containing the purpose or content of your site.

4) Invite Search Engines to visit your website

To encourage Search Engine robots to crawl and index your page,
include the following robots <meta> tags:
<meta name="Robots" content="index,follow">
<meta name="revisit-after" content="10 Days">

5) Submitting your site to Search Engines

Finally, once you have made all these modifications to your site, it's
time to submit it to Search Engines to be indexed. Here's how you
submit your site to Search Engines:

Be sure to follow their instructions; for instance, some Engines
request that you submit only your top-level URL rather than every one
of your pages. Failure to follow the instructions can result in
lowered rankings or even in being blacklisted from a Search Engine.

  Google:
(Be aware that it may take anywhere from 1 to 3 months for your site
to start showing up on Google; however, since Google also uses DMOZ as
a guide to its indexing efforts, you might be able to speed that up a
little by also submitting your site in a DMOZ category as described
next.)

  DMOZ (Directory Mozilla/Open Directory Project):
http://dmoz.org/add.html
(I recommend first finding the best subcategory for your site,
then once you're on the page for the category you choose,
click on the blue "Add URL" hypertext link in the upper
    right-hand corner of the page)

  HotBot:
http://ldbreg.lycos.com/cgi-bin/mayaLogin?m_PR=29&m_CBURL=http://insite.lycos.com/searchservices/lite?step1.asp

  AllTheWeb:
http://www.alltheweb.com/add_url.php

  AltaVista:
http://addurl.altavista.com/addurl/new

Zeal (LookSmart/MSN free submission w/free registration)
http://www.zeal.com/users/register.jhtml

  Yahoo! (free unless you're a for-profit business)

6) The Elusive, Mysterious Page Rank

Page Rank is the extremely complex algorithm (based on more than 100
different factors) that Google uses to decide how "important" a page
is, and thus how high it will rank in Google Search Results.

To get a higher Google Page Rank, you should ask sites with similar or
related themes if they would place a link to your website on theirs in
exchange for you placing a link to their website on yours. You will
especially want to find other sites which already have a Page Rank of
4 or higher.

You can determine a site's Page Rank using the Google Toolbar, which
is an add-in to Microsoft Internet Explorer. You can read more about
the Toolbar, and download it, here:
<http://toolbar.google.com>

Remember that links from a few ***quality*** sites with related themes
who link to only a few other pages (including yours) will do far more
to improve your Page Rank than links from one hundred other pages that
also link to hundreds of other sites.

If you follow these suggestions, I think that you will find that your
site will start appearing in these search engines. Remember that you
may have to be patient; sometimes it can take from 1 to 3 months (or
even longer) for changes to fully percolate through the system.

hello Aceresearcher,

You have shown me much (not kidding) about some things I need to do
with my opening page to my web site.
Also--I thought I'd let you know why you were having difficulty
veiwing my page. I was in the process of changing host servers. I
learned that my site was down twice within 10 days with Winsave.com.
4 hours to be exact on Saturday June 14th. I believe this was the
reason my site was disapearing from the search engines. It took me ALL
night to get the files uploaded to ipowerWeb server. It's back up and
running and I noticed that yahoo has my sight back where it was.
Google too--although it seems to switch back and forth between the
2---if it's not at Yahoo--it appears with Google. I must say--Yahoo
and Google have been providing wonderful services (and for free) to me
since 1995. So, it really touches me to see my site appear on their
search engines.
Ace--thank you so much for the links---and your advice. I took a
quick look then came back to finish reading your letter---I found some
very helpful advice. It's going to take me YEARS to get all of
this---or rather--some of it--I'll never get it all--no lie. Smile
Seriously though---I have been trying to do my own research on the
html and meta tags (I'm so lost--still) but the links that you gave me
look like they offer very trustworthy and good advice. It will be some
time---but I plan on working on it. I did a quick check with the
spider tool and there are errors.
I will have to type out a page explaining what my site is
about---using all of my keywords---and then make them white---so that
they don't show up on the opening page. I really like this
idea---because I have much to say--smile about what is going on with
this world's current events.
About that other website--alfaras-palestine search engine--I still
find it bizare that they would make mention of my site as they have.
And it's not that I mind the Arab world reading my site---I want
everyone to read it (because I believe it gives answers for the
terrorism that we are facing today) but I find it peculiar. I went off
the deep end thinking that they had a way of moving into the place
that my site has with the search engines (I became very suspicious---I
have to stop that)
One more thing---you have been dealing with a person who, in no
way---could even understand the book for dummies when it comes to this
new technology---that makes me the dummy of dummies. I'm not saying
that I'm proud of that---but I don't mind the truth.
I thank you Ace. God Bless
Beth

Beth,

I am *delighted* that you feel that my Answer has been of great help
to you.

Your most important issue right now is indeed making sure that your
hosting service is reliable. If your site is down very much when the
Googlebot visits, it may quit coming back.

I do, however, want to mention one VERY important thing:

You said:
"I will have to type out a page explaining what my site is
about---using all of my keywords---and then make them white---so that
they don't show up on the opening page."

Under **NO** circumstances do you want to do this. This is what Google
calls "Spamming", and they have programmed the Googlebot to detect
this. It's considered a way of trying to "cheat" the Googlebot into
thinking that something that ISN'T on your site is really there
anyway.

A *LOT* of webmasters who knew better than to do this were crying
anyway when their Page Rank dropped to 0 and/or their site dropped
completely out of the Google index on the last run because of this!

Best Wishes for improved Search Rankings and increased traffic to your
website,

ace

O Ace---THANK YOU!!! I did add some words---in white---so that they
wouldn't show up. I removed them---right away---as soon as I read
your letter. I don't want to cheat---I hate cheaters. I'm not a
cheater---but I am a fighter. I think it is so terrible---that it
comes to this---search engines blocking good sites---just because
there are those who would do such things to get ahead. I believe
in---let the better man win. Either you have something to offer---or
you don't. I'm not in this for the money---nor glory. I hope that
the Lord will perform miracles---because that is what it is going to
take to get what I want to share---out to everyone else (the Lord
knows that it won't be upon my wisdom). Ace---Thank you so much for
your advice on this. I took heed to it.
Thank you
Beth
