Question ID: 215784
Looking to buy companies with headquarters/operations located in
HUBZones, as defined by Small Business Administration. I am not
interested in companies that already have SBA Hubzone certification; I
am interested in buying a company in order to increase the number of
employees who reside in Hubzones. Companies that are labor intensive
and are based in the middle of large Hubzones are best. SBA.GOV lists
hubzones and maps.

And what do you consider "large numbers of employees"?

Clarification of Question by laylagarcia-ga on 10 Jun 2003 16:33 PDT
There are advantages for government contractors (such as my company)
to have "SBA Hubzone" status. One requirement is that to remain
Hubzone certified a company must have 35% of its employees residing in
Hubzones. Our company has grown quickly and we want to continue to
keep our Hubzone status. I would like to buy one or more companies in
order to add between 50 and 200 hubzone located employees to our
payroll. I don't care what industry they are in as long as we
understand the risk. Companies such as restaurant franchises may be
perfect - if they are located in the middle of a large hubzone where a
major percentage of their workers live. Hubzones tend to be poor areas
so companies with lower paying job categories may be a good bet. You
may want to check companies for sale...

Hello laylagarcia--

I have researched your question and have spent the evening compiling a
list for you.

The most difficult part of this research was locating solid business
sale leads in non-metropolitan areas. But alas, I found a number of
them for you.

I first found the map of the HubZones to which you were referring. I'm
sure you probably have the link. But if you don't, you may view it at
http://map.sba.gov/hubzone/init.asp

Then I conducted a Google Search for the following terms:
"companies for sale" list

You may view the results of my search online. The link is
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22companies+for+sale%22+list

It looks to me like the best states for you to search in would include
Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Alabama, and Maine.

So I conducted the following searches which came up quite fruitful:

"businesses for sale" alaska
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22businesses+for+sale%22+alaska

"businesses for sale" hawaii
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22businesses+for+sale%22+hawaii

"businesses for sale" oregon
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22businesses+for+sale%22+oregon

"businesses for sale" idaho
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22businesses+for+sale%22+idaho

"businesses for sale" arizona
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22businesses+for+sale%22+arizona

"businesses for sale" alabama
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22businesses+for+sale%22+alabama

"businesses for sale" maine
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22businesses+for+sale%22+maine&btnG=Google+Search

I went through dozens of sites that list businesses for sale. Most
charge fees to peruse the listings. But I found a few that were free
that had some good ones for you. This lead me to a number of different
sites that post businesses for sale. Some of the below businesses have
only a few employees. Others are larger with 50-60 or more.

Thank you for your efforts to date. I have reviewed each of your
findings, however none appear to meet our company's stated objective
(see previous comment) of adding 50 to 200 hubzone based employees to
our company. Your assumption that Hubzones are non-urban areas is
incorrect. For example, cities such as Fresno, Jacksonville, and Miami
have several large Hubzones each. There are hubzones in every single
state. In my previous message I also recommended that you check
restaurant franchises. They are labor intensive and are well
represented in low income areas. Janitorial cleaning services and
landscape maintenance companies are labor intensive and offer lower
wages which may lead to employees living in Hubzones.

Hello laylagarcia--

Thank you for your response. I understand what you're saying and will
do further research for you. I understand that you're saying that some
of these companies are on the small side, but I thought perhaps if you
were interested in more than one company that you may be interested. I
will narrow the search for labor-intensive companies.

I now understand what you're saying about hubzones within metropolitan
areas. While I had initially located the state maps broken down by
county, I now see the hubzone qualifications within cities like Miami
and Jacksonville.

I will get back with you as I find more information.
