Hello, raspue-ga!
Thank you for your question. I understand how frustrating it can be
to find information on the internet when you are unfamiliar with
search terms. However, since this involves a homework assignment, I
hope you will help your daughter read through these links and
information carefully, and then compile some of her own thoughts.
While I have provided certain references, you can get many more ideas
simply by typing in the names of gaming resorts that you have heard
of, clicking on employment links on the websites to learn about job
descriptions, looking at the employment/career portions to read about
benefits linked to working in the gaming industry, etc.
In terms of a workplace-related issue, I have used only one example.
It is very easy to type in a search term like "occupational health and
safety" +gaming, or "workplace agreements +gaming if your daughter
wants to choose a different area of legislation.
Also, if your daughter wants to follow this format but would like to
choose a different area of the hospitality industry, there are many
links to follow from the website below:

GAMING INDUSTRY
***************
=============================================
Describe the Sector and Outline the Functions
=============================================
The Australian gaming industry primarily involves the gambling
sector. It is a cash industry which involves activities such as
playing card games for money, playing machine games or betting on
table games.
Gaming is a unique industry which offers a unique product. "The value
of the product can far outweigh the initial outlay - or it can result
in the total loss of the initial outlay. The random laws of chance
must determine the the result of the purchase."
The gaming industry can be either a private enterprise or
incorporated into a non-profit entity. However, in either situation,
gaming patrons can be robbed unknowingly by manipulation of equipment
and the unscrupulous actions of management who may design game rules
to defraud the customer. The Australian Gaming Commission has been
established to oversee the industry.
Since Australia is very aware that gambling can become an addiction,
many clubs and casinos have employed the Betsafe program, an expert
consultancy service to combat problem gambling.

and hotels in Victoria.

Explain how quality service could be assured in this sector
===========================================================
The Responsible Gaming Code developed by members of the Australian
Gaming Council aims to promote responsibility and quality service in
respect to the sector of the industry involving gaming machines.
"By adopting the fundamentals of the Code, gaming machine and venue
operators will endeavour to:
1.Promote integrity through sound and ethical business practices
2.Train employees in the responsible service of gaming
3.Support objective, ongoing research, to provide independent,
quality advice, expertise and data to all stakeholders and continue to
develop appropriate consumer protection measures and initiatives
4.Make available to customers product information with the aim of
customers being able to make an informed choice regarding their
decision to participate in gaming products
5.Provide a secure and attractive environment while highlighting for
customers the risks and issues associated with problem gambling
6. Engage with stakeholders affected by gambling issues on the basis
of objective research targeted at reducing problem gambling
7. Continue to provide benefits to recreational gamblers by supplying
entertaining gaming products
"Responsible Gaming: A Framework for Responsible Gaming." The
Australian Gaming Council. September 2001
http://austgamingcouncil.org.au/responsiblegambling/AGCcode.pdf
(Please read the entire article, as it fleshes out each of the goals
highlighted above in greater detail)
====
Another thought to consider:
Should quality service also include Consumer Protection by advising
against money loss? Should the government get involved in protecting
consumers by demanding that gaming establishments outline the
pontential hazards of losing money? What about the fact that "Victoria
also has a higher density of poker machines in poorer areas." Is this
something that should be addressed by the government, to protect the
poorer consumer against losses?
The potential for fraud and manipulation has already been described.
The following excerpt is from "Kennett rejects calls for tougher
gaming policy."The World Today. (July 20, 1999)
http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/s37751.htm
COMPERE:"Jeff Kennett has rejected calls for tougher restrictions on
Australia's gaming industry. Even as Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello
indicates that he's leaning towards greater consumer protection for
gamblers, not for the first time, the Victoria Premier takes a
contrary view, saying it's not the role of governments to tell people
what they should and shouldn't do."
LUISA SACCOTELLI:"Jeff Kennett and Peter Costello are at odds again.
The Federal Treasurer calls persuasive the arguments for greater
consumer protection and information about the gambling industry;
information about the chances of winning; and tighter controls on
advertising to warn about the hazards of gaming. Possible warnings
might include this edict: If you think you can win, you're a loser."
JEFF KENNETT:"I don't think we should, as governments, be telling
people what they should and they shouldn't be doing, particularly
adults. If you want to game, that's your business. If you don't... I
don't gamble. Sorry, I do. I mean I do gamble. I buy Tatts Lotto
tickets. I buy the ten weeks because I always forget to buy them so I
buy ten weeks and that's my gaming. But I don't play poker machines
and I don't go to the casino to gamble. But people do and that's their
right."
====
Many clubs have employed the BetSafe program to improve the quality
withing the gaming industry.
http://www.betsafe.com.au/services/benefits.asp
The program includes:
Promoting a good public image
Staff training
Patron Counseling
Crisis Intervention
Specialist Staff Counseling
Club Growth and Social Impact Assessment
etc....
Please read the entire article for a thorough description of each
point and its impact on quality control within the gaming industry!

Analyse the interrelationships this sector has with other sectors in
the industry
================================================================================
Example - The Caterbury League Club
http://www.canterburyleague.com.au/
In the following example, the gaming industry has merged with the club
industry so it has a facility in which to operate, and the club can
generate revenue for its non-profit interests. Coupled with this
association is also a link to the food and beverage industry, since
members who enjoy the club for gaming and other activities often want
the luxury of an eating establishment
Take a look at the Canterbury League Club website.
The club industry offers gaming (as shown on the home page), a health
and fitness club, and many other amenities for it's members. Click on
the left sidebar for "membership benefits."
Full members can join any of the inter-clubs, including
Golf
Squash
Fishing
Photography
Indoor sports
Social bowling
Chess
Use of club facilities, which include sauna, gym, squash courts and
snooker tables
Health Club membership involves an additional charge
Click on the Dining link on the left sidebar. The Canterbury has
several restaurants and bars to accomodate it's members.
"Canterbury has excellent dining facilities which have recently been
greatly expanded. The Atrium Restaurant provides relaxed, elegant
dining in an Australian New Cuisine style, while the new Banyan Bistro
offers a wide range of meals for informal, family style dining. The
Dynasty Chinese Restaurant offers authentic Asian menus, in a
spectacular Pagodo-style setting, featuring aged timbers and a
watercourse which gives the impression of a restaurant floating on
water. Its always a great dining experience for members and their
guests at Canterbury."

Example - Magic Millions Gold Coast
http://www.magicmillions.com.au/gold_coast.html
Here is an example of a resort that intertwines the gaming industry
with the housekeeping industry and the food and beverage industry.
Conrad Jupiters Resort and Casino is one of Australia's largest hotels
with 609 guest rooms and suites. Each room is fully equipped with
electronic key systems, spectravision in-room movies, cable TV,
individually controlled air conditioning, tea and coffee making
facilities, minibar, hair dryers, radio, daily maid service, irons and
ironing boards and in-room safes.
The Casino is open 24 hours a day with over 100 gaming tables and more
than 1000 video gaming machines.
Six award-winning restaurants provide an individual atmosphere to
cater to every taste, while nine bars do the same for every thirst.

==
Impact on Working Conditions

self-explanatory. An individual may feel free to apply for any job (if
qualified) and know that they will be considered fairly for
employement, and treated fairly once they are employed.
Rights and Responsibilities of employees and employers in relation to
this issue
================================================================================
We've already seen the employee's rights. Can an employer find an
exemption in terms of hiring?
35. Exemptions - work
(1) A person may discriminate against another person in the area of
work
(a) by fixing reasonable terms and conditions if that other person,
because of age or impairment, has a restricted capacity to do the
work; or
(b) if the discrimination is based
(i) on a genuine occupational qualification which the other
person is required to fill; or
(ii) on the other person's inability to adequately perform the
inherent requirements of the work even where the special need of the
other person has been or were to be accommodated.
(2) A person may discriminate in offering work where the work is to be
performed in the person's home.
36. Exemptions - age
A person may discriminate on the grounds of age by imposing a
standard age for commencement of work or a standard retirement age.
37. Exemptions - sexuality
A person may discriminate against another person on the grounds of
sexuality in the area of work where:
(a) the work involves the care, instruction or supervision of

regard to all the relevant circumstances of the case including the
person's actions.
