Thanks for the interesting question. 

UNIX is a computer operating system created by Bell Labs in the 1960s.
Its two main distiguishing characteristics are that it is:

* Multitasking - allows for more than one task/program to be run at a
time.
* Multiuser - can support more than one user at a time.

The three main parts of the UNIX operating system are:

* The kernel - the core of the program which is loaded up when you
start.

* The shell - the program where you enter your commands to the
operating system.

* The file system - where your files and data are stored.
