Hi nhamil: Thanks for the interesting question. UNIX is a computer operating system created by Bell Labs in the 1960s. Its two main distiguishing characteristics are that it is: * Multitasking - allows for more than one task/program to be run at a time. * Multiuser - can support more than one user at a time. An excellent telling of the history of UNIX (including its creation, overview, and inventors) can be found at the Bell Labs (now called Lucent Technologies) site: The Creation of the UNIX* Operating System URL: http://www.bell-labs.com/history/unix/ The three main parts of the UNIX operating system are: * The kernel - the core of the program which is loaded up when you start. * The shell - the program where you enter your commands to the operating system. * The file system - where your files and data are stored. More about these three important parts and other valuable information can be found at the following excellent tutorial: Unix Tutorial URL: http://www.cs.wayne.edu/labPages/Unix_T/start.html I hope this information helps with your research. If you need any clarification of the information I have provided, please ask using the clarification feature and provide me with additional details as to what you are looking for. As well, please allow me to provide you with clarification(s) *before* you rate this answer. Thank you. websearcher-ga Search Strategy (on Google): "what is unix" "history of unix" |
