I am looking for a book I ran into some time ago which basically
contains a number of common, well-thought-out database schemas for
implementers to drop in (for instance: accounting system schema, user
security schema, etc.)

Find me this book!

Hi joelpt,

The book you seek is likely to be "The Data Model Resource Book: A
Library of Universal Data Models" by Len Silverston:

Amazon.com: Books: The Data Model Resource Book, Vol. 1
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0471380237

This was first published in 1997 and has recently been updated. It
covers database schemas for core business functions. A second volume
has recently been added, covering schemas for specialist applications
such as manufacturing, travel, health care and e-commerce. It's "The
Data Model Resource Book Vol. 2: A Library of Data Models for Specific
Industries":

Amazon.com: Books: The Data Model Resource Book, Vol. 2
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0471353485

Numerous sample pages are accessible from the links above.

Google search strategy:

"database designs" examples book
://www.google.com/search?q=%22database+designs%22+examples+book

"data model resource book"
