I'm looking for a book from my childhood on the U.S. and Soviet space
programs. I recall that it was oversize, that it summarized in a
pretty fair amount of detail all the manned space flights up to that
time, and that a particular hallmark of one section of the book was
the parade of line drawings of the rockets used to send astronauts and
cosmonauts into space, mission by mission. These drawings were found (if I
recall correctly) at the bottom of the page. Any ideas on the title? A
small tip if you can also tell me where I can find a copy in a hurry.

Take a look at this description:

"1969...
95 p. illus., ports. 24 cm. . Subjects: Astronautics--Soviet
Union--Juvenile Literature. Summary: Discusses the technical
achievements, philosphy, and goals of the Russian space program and
compares them to those of the United States. Binding is HB. Juvenile
Literature. Summary: Discusses the technical achievements, philosphy,
and goals of the Russian space program and compares them to those of
the United States."

Does this sound like your book?

If so, I can provide title, author, and place to purchase the book.

Hello.

The description above refers to "The Russians in Space" (1969) by Erik
Bergaust.

Source:
Library of Congress catalog description:
"Discusses the technical achievements, philosophy, and goals of the
Russian space program and compares them to those of the United
States."
http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v3=1&DB=local&CMD=010a+68026552&CNT=10+records+per+page

"The Russians in Space" is available from sellers on Alibris:
http://www.alibris.com/search/detail.cfm?BID=8080623034
Or Abebooks:
http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=145667160

The Library of Congress only classifies two children's books from the
'60s or early '70s as being on the subject of Soviet astronautics. One
is the book mentioned above. The other book is:

"Cosmonauts in orbit; the story of the Soviet manned space program
[by] Gene and Clare Gurney" (1972).
http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v3=1&DB=local&CMD=010a+76189516&CNT=10+records+per+page
That book is also available from Alibris:
http://www.alibris.com/search/detail.cfm?BID=8135765096
The description of this book does not mention any comparison with the
space program of the U.S., though.

search strategy: library of congress catalog
juvenile material: soviet astronauts, soviet astronautics

I hope this helps.

Swift and sure. It may or may not be the book I am looking for, but
it's just as interesting a possibility. With an assist from hummer -
ga, the researchers of Google Answers comes through again.

Hi mccook!

Here's another possibility:

Furniss, Tim:
A Source Book Of Rockets, Spacecraft and Spacemen
Ward Lock, 1973. 1st edition. 144pp, long format, blue boards,
dustjacket. Many b + w illustrations... The history and development of
space travel and rockets, with pictures of the craft and astronauts,
the background of each craft or person and technical data.

There are nine copies for sale on http://www.abebooks.com ,
unfortunately, none of them have a photo.
