A month or so ago, I discovered that I could no longer access some
links in e-mail messages. About the same time, I discovered that I
couldn’t open some addresses in my AOL “favorites” library. It has
been very odd because some links and addresses open, other do not.
I’ve tried cutting and pasting the address into the URL box and I have
tried typing the address directly into the URL box and the page still
fails to open.

Here’s what happens: I click on the link and or the address and the
computer appears to go to the specific enter the address in the URL
box ... but I just get a white window and an hour glass. I've let it
go for up to 1/2 an hour ... the screen never loads.

Unfortunately, this has been happening with a few other situations:
I've been unable to log on to a couple of forums and I can no longer
open links sent to me by the World Bank in their e-mails.

The problem with the architectural software forums was solved when
their tech support e-mailed me the direct link … which was the same
address that was saved in my address book or what I typed in to the
URL box. World Bank hasn't responded yet.

I've run the virus, ad-aware and spyware scans. I deleted the ad stuff
... but no other problems showed up. I've also cleared out the temp
files ... internet and otherwise.

Since them, with the guidance of AOL’s tech support, I have unloaded
their software and re-loaded it with a CD I recently received in the
mail. I have also upgraded my browser from IE 5.5 to IE 6.0.

So far, none of my efforts have worked. I still can’t open most links
directly from e-mails.

Can you solve my problem?

Becky

PS My OS is Windows 98 and I’m using a Dell PC. I have plenty of
hard drive space and RAM.

This phrase "specific enter the address"

should read

... the computer appears to go to the specific address, the address is
entered in the URL box ... but I just get a white window ...

I understand your question firsthand. I had the exact problem you
describe and had about given up hope. I am not a computer guru and
struggle with problems. I finally found the answer that cured my
problem and it MIGHT help you. Please read the entire post before you
try the download. If something goes wrong, I would rather that it be
your decision.

Now we're getting somewhere.
Paste this url into your address bar and download this tool
(msrepair):

http://download.microsoft.com/download/msninvestor/patch/1.0/win98/en-us/mcrepair.exe

Run it and restart your pc. This may well take care of all of your
problems. The "Incompatible...rcp stub" error refers to a file that's
out of sync with your OS...this happened during the install of Java,
no doubt.
Let me know how this works for you...

This did work for me and I hope that it works for you.

You're a star! The discussion at tek-tips was a bit disjointed but
included all aspects of the problems that I've been having down to the
little boxes where graphics should be.

I loaded the mcrepair, ran it, and I can now open links within
e-mails.

Looks like my problem is solved!

Becky, glad to hear that it worked for you. Should I post my comment
as an answer. I don't care. Whatever you think is fair.
