Remember, boy, that once he was your kind;
His eyes are pouched and gout is in his walk,
Once he had speed and hair blown to the wind,
Once he had beauty and flame winged his talk;
With song distilled from leaf-loud choirs at dawn
The grace of sunlit lances touched his way,
He piped through all his blossomed world a faun
And tamed his love one rose-lipped night of May.
Beware your mocking, boy, lest it be so
In the grey pattern of the years for you;
We tested life together and I know,
We two were friends together and we knew.
And when we meet throughout life's entropy;
There still endures youth's magic poetry. |
