Hi biggles69,

A DVD player such as recent versions of Windows Media Player will
refuse to play a Macrovision-protected DVD unless either:

the "TV signal out" function in your video card is switched off

or:

your video card supports Macrovision copy protection.

The Macrovision copy protection messes with the vertical blanking part
of the video signal so that the picture will display on a TV but
cannot be satisfactorily copied on most video recorders. The
assumption is that if you have the "TV signal out" function switched
on, you might have a video recorder connected.

Presumably the DVD player authors are required to cripple their
software in this way as part of the deal to license the DVD
specifications.

Here is a Usenet posting summarising this:

"Help with wm 9 please"
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=%23nHog3s0CHA.1712%40TK2MSFTNGP10

So I suggest to configure your video card to switch off the "TV out"
signal, and to watch your DVD on the computer monitor instead.

Google search strategy:

I performed Google searches on the web and also on Usenet groups for
the string "0xC00D1167". The "web" search yielded no results, but the
"groups" search yielded the answer:

Still not solved the problem, although I feel I am getting nearer.

I am unable to find a "TV Signal Out" On/Off switch, either on the
card or on the driver.

The Card is s 64MB Geforce 2 MX 400 AGP, and I assume it supports
Macrovision ?

I have tried an older card which does not have a TV Out function, but
this does not work either.

Hi biggles69,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having problems.

You should be able to disable TV-out from Display Settings (accessed
from the control panel). Click on "Advanced" then look for "Output
Device" - according to the following Usenet posting:

http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=3BF156D8.A1D51D12%40ntlworld.com&rnum=5&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DISO-8859-1%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dgooglet%26q%3Dgeforce%2Bdisable%2B%2522tv-out%2522%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg

If that doesn't help, this user suggested to install older drivers:

According to Digital Digest's Nvidia DVD FAQs
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/nvidia/nvdfaq.html
the Macrovision function is provided by the tv-out chip rather than by
the nvidia graphics chip, and "since card manufacturers might use
different tv-out chips, it is hard to give a clear answer". The URL
above provides further information for cards with tv-out chips
numbered BT869, 7003 and 7004.

I hope you will soon be playing your DVD successfully.

Are you just trying to play the DVD or are you attempting to copy it
to VHS?

Analogue Copy Protection (APS) is something cooked up by Macrovision
to protect media. While a DVD should play fine, APS would distort the
image so that a VHS copy made from the DVD would be unwatchable.

Macrovision
http://www.macrovision.com/solutions/video/copyprotect/

I searched in for 'macrovision' and 'analogue copy protection', as I'm
somewhat aware of the issue.

Hope that helps,

Poe
