Hi, Id like a statistician or someone knowledgable of actuarial
science to interpret the life table in
http://www3.who.int/whosis/life_tables/life_tables_process.cfm?country=SGP&language=english

Id like to find out what is the probability of a 55 year old male
living till he is 80. In particular I want to know what the
probability of him dying at age 56,57,58...80.

Also, to what extent would you revise these probabilities if I know
his family has a history of heart disease, his mom in particular was
very obese. Does not exercise much, and wife passed away recently.

The life tables from the World Health Organization are but a snapshot
- - for one year – and may not be projectable. The existence of an
epidemic in one year (such as SARS or a serious flue epidemic) can
skew numbers. But given your request, we’ll assume them to represent
a statistical average over a long period.

Another note: I won’t project likelihood of death at each age, but for
the age groups reported by WHO.

Percentage likelihood of man, 55, from Singapore dying at these ages
uses the number actual deaths of those over age 55 (plus the 36 people
still living over age 100).

55-59: 8.5%
60-64: 12.3%
65-69: 15.9%
70-74: 17.8%
75-79: 15.4%
80-84: 13.4%
85-89: 9.6%
90-94: 5.1%
95-99: 1.4%
over 100: 0.8%

Each of the other factors: weight, family history of heart disease,
loss of a spouse can be an accelerating factor in mortality, though
it’s difficult to quantify. Encouraging a grandparent to exercise,
control weight and cholesterol, and possibly remarry could reverse
those effects.

Best regards,
