Dear Scott42,

Thank you for your inquiry. I have assumed that you wanted this information
for a home security system. Also, I have taken the liberty to include
additional information about alarm systems that I believe will be of interest
and of help to you.

Most traditional systems use VCR technology to record activity. However, I
found 2 sites that provide complete alarm systems that are PC based. I was
unable to find any systems that were in a “small self-contained package.”

PC-Based Security Products
CCTV wholesalers.com
http://www.cctvwholesalers.com/?source=overture/
Check out their PC-witness Pro line of products. “Our packages include Pro-
Grade Hi-Resolution Cameras which are also Infrared Sensitive for Low Light
situations, cabling, power supplies for all cameras, and our very own PC-
Witness Pro Custom built PC system. PC-Witness features include very powerful
scheduled, on demand, or motion detection recordings.”

Bakson
http://www.bakson.com/
These folks develop a product call PC Patrol. “Connect up to two cameras to
your PC and record video only when motion is detected. PC Patrol® alerts you of
movement activity by sending alert messages to your pager or cell phone.”

Remote Monitoring Services
In researching this question for you, I found 3 services that will install
security accessories that you need and then remotely monitor your household.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, remote monitoring services
are more effective. See article link below.

ADT

ADT is a very well known security product provider.

Are you sure you need "motion sensing hardware" to achieve your purpose? It is
possible to detect motion with image processing software.

Also, a small camera capable of sending images via a wireless network (e.g.
802.11b) would eliminate the need to store the data on an attached hard drive.
It could instead stream it to a server, which could even be offsite for better
security.
