Hi! I've looked for this in the past. The closest I can find is this: http://cj.catalogcity.com/cc.class/cc?main=catalog&ccsyn=22&pcd=5167656 The candle I am looking for is shaped like the one linked above. It was white in color, and inside the pyramid was some semi-precious stones. If you held it up to the light, you could kinda see the "jewels" inside. It retailed for about $30.00 It was wrapped in cellophane and on the bottom was a single folded sheet of paper where you could read HALF of a fable. The fable described the reason for the "jewels" being inside. It was a love story, a male commoner, that was imprisioned because he had fallen in love with a Princess. She however loved him too. She snuck him the candle so that he could burn it down to the jewels and use them to bribe the guards to let him go... I couldn't read the remaining part of the fable. I would like to find where I can buy this online. Thanks for trying, I have looked and used nearly every keyword I can think of. I have searched fable sites, all to no avail. Don't spend a lot of time on this, I am really hoping one of you will recognize this immediately and clue me in! Cher has a catalog of metaphysical items that I thought I saw it in a couple years ago. The one I saw in a store was in a Variety store in Las vegas, I think it was "Savon", a sorta drug-store with a lot of gift items... Good luck | |

Yes, I've found that too. I actually found one at a garage sale, unlit, and when I did burn it I had $1.50 inside!! I only paid 25 cents for it! |

K, Regarding the meaning of "close, but no cigar," I think this comes from an old carnival saying. Cigars were a popular prize for games of chance, and the carny would say "close, but no cigar" when the customer nearly won the prize. This encouraged the customer to try again, since he had been so "close" to winning. At least that's what my father told me, and he was a bigtime carnival buff. Sorry to interrupt the search for Cynthia's pyramid, but it's hard for me to pass by a trivia question, even if I see it in the 'Comments' section. ;-) ~Pink |

I found a newsgroup post that sounds similar to your fable about the princess: "The Fable of the Treasure Candle Once upon a time, in a distant land, there lived a fair princess who was in love with a brave and young Knight. But, alas, the Knight was imprisoned by a most evil King. After longing for her beloved for many a month, the Princess conceived a clever plan. She traveled to a mystical kingdom deep within the earth where she gathered crystals and stones with magical powers. Upon returning home, she made a candle in which she concealed the treasures. Then she arranged to have it delivered to her lover in his cold dark dungeon. The sad and disheartened Knight welcomed the gift of light and immediately burned his candle, unaware of its special powers. When the crystal revealed itself, a rainbow appeared from within. A wave of joy and love swept through him as he realized the special nature of the gift. At that moment, the crystal in the candle the Princess was burning, also shimmered with a rainbow. Then, lo and behold, the two tiny rainbows soared out into the heavens and became one. The power of their love was so great that they were drawn into the rainbow's arc where neither prison walls nor evil kings couldever keep them apart. Within each Treasure Candle, you will find a crystal and other gifts of the Earth, each with their own special power. Hold your crystal up to the light; you just might see the beginning of your own magical rainbow. With love and rainbow wishes, The Keeper of the Flame" http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=01bdaa1d%247f582ae0%242ca6cacc%40taylor&oe=UTF-8&output=gplain |

Incredible pinkfreud --I believe that's the fable, sans the part about using the jewels to bribe guards. I also remember the fable said she dressed up as a peasant to get the candle to him, and told the guards to give it to him to help keep him warm. In the half of the paper I could read, he had lit the candle and in usual "Arabian Knights" fashion, I was unable to finish reading the story unless I bought the candle. --Needless to say I was broke that day and when I went back the candle was gone. The store manager said he'd look into it but he never did. Later I saw it in that catalog I mentioned, and this is the closest I have come! This link is VERY close: http://www.buyacandle.com/shop_hiddentres.html Just missing the semi-precious stones and fable. Now, at least I know it's called a "Treasure Candle" I'll leave this open in case someone runs across it, but please don't spend a lot of time on it. I have scoured everywhere. |

cynthia... Well, it seems that these candles go by several names... friendship or treasure or discovery candles. I came so close it hurts. I found a candle company that sells pyramid candles with semi-precious stones in them, but no accompanying story. Swan Candles version is here: RAINBOW BLANCA PYRAMID CANDLE $16.25 http://www.swanscandles.com/Checkout4Pro/bin/nowcgi.cgi/images/ft501.jpg They also make a Hidden Treasure Castle Candle $11.95 in three colors: blue, pink and aqua. These each have a scroll with the castles's legend, attached with a cascade of gold ribbons and stars. They have a "Once upon a time..." magical story about the castle, and, "hidden inside each candle is a goldplated ring or charm which is revealed when burned". http://www.swanscandles.com/Checkout4Pro/bin/nowcgi.cgi/images/hidden.jpg Their full line of 'treasure' candles is on this page: http://www.swanscandles.com/Checkout4Pro/bin/nowcgi.cgi/discover.htm Searches done, via Google: "treasure OR friendship OR discovery candle" story OR fable ://www.google.com/search?q=%22treasure+OR+friendship+OR+discovery+candle%22+story+OR+fable You might find something more among the 52 results from the search above. I didn't look closely at all of them. sublime1-ga |
