Question ID: 216975
I am trying to help my children search the history of their biological
father.Their fathers grandfather was a full blood indian. We were told
he was Caddo Choctaw. They were located, we think, in Louisiana.
However, we were told his last name was Sullivan. That really threw me
because Sullivan is such an Irish name. Any suggestions how I can help
my children?

Do you have any other information that might help in our Research?
Other names, places, dates, events, etc. that are or might be
connected with this person or his family might be useful.

In response to your question I can only try to answer questions. When
I was married to this family they were very secretive. My children's
great grandfather's last name was Sullivan. We were told he was
full-blooded Caddo Choctaw indian. I only met him once on his death
bed. This was sometime in the 1950's. My mother-in-law, my children's
grandmother's name was Elizabeth Sullivan. She married Burgess George
Cole Sr. Their residence inthe early years was in Monroe, Louisiana.
The only name I ever heard her mother called was Meme. The only
information that I have came between 1952 and 1964 when I left the
children's father. The children's father, Burgess George Cole Jr. I
think has passed away. The last time the childen heard from him he
was in Monroe, La. If I get anymore information I will let you know.

This is only an interesting note so don't become misled by the
information:

While the Caddo and Choctaw Indians didn't inhabit this area, and this
may not have much to do with your situation (?) it is an interesting
subject about both the Sullivan and Burgess names (Your children's
father's first name "Burgess" was probably a legacy surname taken from
some notable relative of his past, as was the old custom)-

"The given name of Burgess also is used among the descendants of Darby
Sullivan and Burgess Sullivan, Jr., moved to Spotsylvania and lived on
adjoining land to Francis Sullivan (son of Darby and Ann Fugate
Sullivan) and to William Sullivan (wife Lucy) of Orange Co. across the
county line. It is important to note that William Sullivan's daughter,
Philadelphia Sullivan, was living close to Gabriel Sullivan's children
in Stafford in 1813. Three of Philadelphia's nieces married grandsons
of Darby Sullivan and Ann Fugate who were also descendants of Richard
Porch (d 1750). Since Richard Porch had a daughter of the unusual name
of Lettice/Letitia, I believe that Gabriel Sullivan's mother,
Lettice/Letitia, was a sister of Richard Porch! Both the Fugates and
the Porches appear to descend from the Martin family who lived on land
adjoining the late chief of the Patawomeck Tribe, Wahanganoche (nephew
of Powhatan), and it is this connection from which I believe the very
evident Indian blood springs! From the photos of some of Darby's
descendants, the Indian blood cannot be denied."

Interesting coincidence isn't it?

Here's a possible clue. There is a listing for "SULLIVAN, JYME O,
10-31-1909, 02-05-1990, MEME" on this page.

"Flynn Cemetery - Lincoln County, Oklahoma" (Submitted 2001 by

Perhaps this is Meme Sullivan, mother of Elizabeth Sullivan?
