I need access to lists and addresses of art museum trustees in the U.S.

Museums often make available lists of their trustees, but don't
generally give out their addresses as well.

Would a source of information for trustee name-only lists be of use to
you?

Obviously addresses would be more desireable and I would pay quite a
bit more, but names and Museum affiliations would be OK (what's the
fastest way to look up there addresses?) if there were enough art
museums involved.

Hello again woodeye-ga,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I'm still not certain if
the information I have will suit your needs.

Most non-profit organizations like museums submit reports to the IRS
on their financial status. These reports usually contain the names of
members of the Board of Directors, and often include names of the
Trustees as well (they also include *a ton* of additional financial
information!).

In order to access the information, you need to look it up, one museum
at a time.

If this would suit your needs, I can post as an answer the detailed
instructions for accessing the information on the IRS forms.

Let me know if this would work for you.

Hi pafalafa-ga, Please go ahead and get me the links, they will be
useful. Do you know any researchers that I can hire to do the leg
work? Thanks

Hello saabster-ga,

Glad to hear you want to go forward on this.

The site I alluded to earlier is:

http://www.guidestar.com

They describe themselves this way:

"GuideStar, the national database of U.S. charitable organizations,
gathers and distributes data on more than 850,000 IRS-recognized
nonprofits...Connecting people with nonprofit information since 1994,
GuideStar offers basic, in-depth, and customized data services. Which
level of information is right for you? The choice is yours."

Most of the information on Guidestar is available at no charge
(although there is a charge for their customized services). You do
have to register at the site, however, to access some of the more
interesting information sources.

Non-profit groups file something called a Form 990 with the IRS every
year. Guidestar makes these forms available on their site as PDF
files, and also extracts some of the key information in an
easy-to-access format.

For instance, here's some of the data from Guidestar's listing for the
Museum of Modern Art in NYC:

The full Form 990 for MOMA (all 34 pages of it) is also available at
the site.

Not every museum will have the trustees listed out so neatly (many set
up auxiliary institutions for the trustees, and file under a different
name than the main museum). But the information is generally out
there. It does take a bit of leg work to extract it, though.

As for your question about finding researchers to do the work...why
not just ask here at Google Answers. There are 500 of us waiting for
the next question to be posted!

I hope this is the information you needed. If anything here is not
clear, or requires elaboration, just let me know through a Request for
Clarification and I'll be happy to assist you further.

Most Museum trustees can be reached via mail using the Museum's
address. Most of these people are very prominant and generally have
someone else opening their mail anyway, so it will be screened before
ever reaching them no matter what you do!

Thanks for your comment, but I still would accept the names of the
trustees. I'll raise the fee to $20.
