What do you mean specifically by "customized"?

Clarification of Question by jsp305-ga on 13 Jun 2003 19:59 PDT
By customizable, I mean that the map can be changed by the maker so
that certain things on the map can be deleted (for example, excessive
road names), or headings moved (for example, the "Lake Norman" heading
moved from the top to the side, etc.) I need this map to be
appropriate for use on a table and don't want too much detail. Most
available maps have too much or too little detail -- or they have
advertising on them, etc. I just need a map that I have leverage to
change slightly to fit my needs. Thanks!!!! Jamie

Is using a free software program that will do this an option for you?
(Some folks are more computer literate than others, and the program
I'm thinking of is a bit different :-) If so, would you take a link
to the program and a link to a map to use in the program as an answer?

Dear Jsp-305,

A customizable map of Lake Norman could be found at the US Census
Bureau's site:
http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapsurfer?infact=2&outfact=2&act=move&on=miscell&on=interstate&on=statehwy&on=water&tlevel=-&tvar=-&tmeth=i&mlat=35.8089&mlon=-80.8728&msym=redpin&mlabel=Iredell+County%2C+NC&murl=&lat=35.5506477&lon=-80.9396896&wid=0.300&ht=0.300&conf=mapnew.con
(or: http://makeashorterlink.com/?X1DE12035, if that huge link doesn't
go well).

You oculd do the following and much more:
Zoom in and out
Download GIF image

And remove or add the following features:
City labels
  Grid (lat/lon)
  Cens bg points
  Cens bg bounds
  Congress dist
  Counties
  Indian Resv
  Highways
  Parks and Other
  MSA/CMSA
  Cities/Towns
  Railroad
  Shoreline
  Streets
  Census Tracts
Interstate labels
  St Hwy labels
  State Bounds
  US Hwy labels
  Water bodies
  Zipcode points

I hope that answered your question. As an amateur in orienteering, I
began by searching for a map of the Lake Norman area, and going on
from there. Please contact me if you need any clarifications on this
answer. I'd be pleased to clarify my answer before you rate it.

Have fun!

acorn-ga -- yes, I would like a link to the software program you
mentioned. I think I am computer literate enough to figure out a
moderately difficult one. Thanks --a link to the program and a link
to a map would be awesome! Jamie
