A friend of mine in St. Louis has a large collection of antique
Japanese military swords and related military memorabilia. She is
interested in having them appraised by a regionally-located
independent appraiser who specializes in such materials. (She wants
an independent because she desires someone who does not a vested
interest in gaining a commission from the sale of such items.)

Once the collection is appraised, she is further interested in
determining the auction houses that specialize in Japanes/Asian and/or
military items so she may gradualy sell off the collection.

My questions:

1. Can you find the name(s) and contact info for appropriate
independent appraisers who specialize in Japanese/Asian and/or
military items in the St. Louis or Midwest region?

2. Can you find the name(s) of auction houses that specialize in
selling Japanese/Asian and/or military items?

Thank you!!

Greetings Prpro:

Well, I certainly expected to find many more appraisers than I
actually located and I'm surprised there aren't more Japanese
collectibles sites. I wasn't certain if the military items were WWII
or not but I included that in many of my searches. Regarding possible
expert appraisals, I have located the following possibilities for your
friend:

Jerry's Military Collectibles
P.O. BOX 221121
KIRKWOOD, MISSOURI
63122 U.S.A.
BY APPOINTMENT
Business phone (314) 965-5257
Home phone (314) 821-3522

[WARNING!! EXTREMELY LOUD MUSIC FILE ON THIS SITE!!]

Weinand Militaria
P.O. Box 323
Quincy, Illinois 62306-0323
Phone: 217-223-2322
Fax: 217-223-2552
mailto:relic@bcl.net
"Owned and operated by Ron Weinand, offers a wide range of militaria
from Germany, Japan, and the United States, both World War I and II.
Also offers an SS Officer research service and a collector's "wants
list". Publishes a large listing of militaria for sale ($4)."

For an online source, I located a California business and museum at
http://www.militaryantiquesmuseum.com/ - in every state search I did,
this link kept coming up on the results pages although it was located
in none of the state names I searched in conjunction with the
keywords. Military Antiques Museum has an online contact form at
http://www.militaryantiquesmuseum.com/contact.php and their
description states "The historic river front town of Petaluma, just 45
minutes North of San Francisco, California is the home of Military
Antiques and Museum. With over 4,000 square feet of retail space plus
our 2,000 square foot museum, it is the country's largest retail
military shop."

Many dealers keep logs of interested buyers all over the nation and
the world so a large site such as this one might be of great help.
They may also be privy to a list of experts in your friend's area that
is not published online.

Regarding auction sites, if the swords are antiques (100+ years old),
your friend may want to query Sotheby's at 212.606.7350 - see
http://search.sothebys.com/ for the website. If they are WWII
collectibles, they might also be interested if the swords were rare
ones.
