Hello mark800-ga,
Thank you for your question.
My search returned the following results for information about the Gas
Barbecue Grill Industry
The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA) March 5, 2003
The barbecue industry represents nearly $3-billion in retail sales:
$1.8 billion for grills,
and more than $1-billion for fuels, accessories and related equipment
including replacement parts. Currently, 60 percent of all grill owners
barbecue outdoors year-round (nearly 70 percent of gas grill owners).
All indications are that the number of times consumers fire up their
grills will increase again in 2003.
( . . . )
Gas grills: The fastest growing category since 1994, gas grills in
2002 increased their unit market share to 63 percent. Much of the
increase came from mid-range units priced between $400-$500, but fully
80 percent of all grills sold are still priced below $300. More than 6
million of the gas grills shipped were in the LP stand-up category.
While super-premium grills got tremendous retailer and consumer
attention, the industry believes they accounted for little more than 1
percent of gas grill sales, although the dollar volume is significant.
Solid proof that consumers continue to add new grill appliances to
their barbecue lineup comes from the turkey fryer/fish cooker
category, which rose more than 50 percent in 2002, from 900,000 to 1.4
million units.

From the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association - March 4, 2002
Facts and Figures
- One-fifth of all grill owners have both a charcoal and a gas unit.
- Growth in gas grill ownership continues (61 percent of all grill
owners have one)
- LP is the favorite fuel (92 percent), but a growing number (8
percent) of barbecuers use natural gas the most often
- The Northeast continues to lead in LP gas grills (71 percent)
- Among all grill owners, 5 percent have only an electric unit, 29
percent charcoal only, 48 percent gas only, and 18 percent both
charcoal and gas
- Eleven percent of grill owners now have a water smoker, with
charcoal-fueled units most popular, followed by electric, then gas
- 55 percent of grill owners responded that their next purchase will
be a gas grill (LP).
- Men, not surprisingly, still seem to make more of the grill
selections (38 percent); women decide 26 percent of the time, and 32
percent are termed joint decisions. Men tend to pick natural gas and
smoker grills; women choose electric.
72 percent of natural gas grill owners also barbecue throughout the
year
Built-in gas grill owners also strongly report
heavy all season grilling
- Heavy users tend to be in the Northeast, use gas grills, and have
larger families
- 30 percent of consumers now rely on the convenience of cylinder
exchange to get propane for their grills up from 5 percent
- only 6 years ago -- and almost half of all gas grill owners have two
or more cylinders, so they are never caught short.
- 70 percent of gas grill owners have their tanks refilled
- 61 percent had their cylinders exchanged or refilled one or two
times last year; 28 percent three times or more
- Many gas grill users (45 percent) own two or more LP gas cylinders
- Gas grill owners list larger cooking surfaces, reliable brand, side
shelves and a multiple burner system, which Myers says provides
greater cooking flexibility.
- An increasing number of gas grill owners have grills with metal
bars or plates for heat
conduction in place of lava rocks or ceramic briquets.

From the Propane Council:
Over the past few years, as barbecuing has increased in popularity,
gas grill sales have skyrocketed. The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue
Association (HPBA) reports that in 1999 there were 3.1 billion
cookouts. The industry sold approximately 8.6 million gas grills
compared with 3.8 million in 1994. Nearly 93 percent of gas grill
owners chose propane as their gas grill fuel, according to the HPBA.
The top three manufacturers of full-size gas grills are:
Bradley/Coleman, Sunbeam Outdoor Products, and Weber-Stephen.
(. . . )
Gas grills are environmentally friendly. According to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), charcoal releases 105 times
more carbon monoxide than propane.
Propane has an overall stove efficiency nearly four times that of
charcoal (Americans Continue Their Love Affair With Summer Grilling,
May 22, 2002, PERC).
The percentage of grill owners with gas grills has steadily increased
for more than a decade.
Cooking with gas is preferred by both indoor and outdoor chefs.

Tank Refill Costs
=================
Cost: A 20 pound tank of LP is about 425,000 BTU's and costs about $13
to refill (more if you tank exchange).

==================================================
New empty propane tanks can be purchased for $25.00 or more but I
obtained mine for $3.00 each. Here is how I did it - In my area it
costs $9.95 to refill a propane tank or at Home Depot it costs $12.95
with an exchange of your old tank. I found that the stores that refill
tanks sometimes have an accumulation of the "old style" tanks that
people had decided not to upgrade to an ACME/OPD valve, tanks are
defective or the tanks have passed their expiration dates and the user
has left their old tanks with the store. So, after visiting four
locations, I recovered a dozen used old style tanks for free. Then I
found out that Home Depot in my area has no restrictions on what kind
of tank you could exchange for the new ACME/OPD tanks. After the
exchange, I have all new style filled tanks that I exchanged for
$12.95 each that only cost me $3.00 for each empty tank
($12.95-$9.95). Be aware that the old style tanks will not work on a
new style grille but an old style grille will work with a new style
tank.

Q. Is a natural gas grill more economical to operate than propane?
Our calculations show that, on average, a propane grill costs nearly
seven times more to operate than a natural gas grill. This is based on
a standard propane cylinder refill at $18 per tank or $4.19 per therm.
Natural gas prices fluctuate, but average about $.60 per therm. At
this price, the natural gas energy equivalent would be only $2.58,
saving $15.42 over the cost of a tank of propane

appliances can cost as much as $5,000 - $10,000.
