I'm looking for events or topics that would cause the value of the US
Dollar, the Japanese Yen and the European Euro to appreicate or
depreicate from Jan. 1, 2003 thru May 13, 2003. More so on the
exchange rate between the US dollar versus European Euro rate and the
US dollar versus Japanese Yen rate. They could be things like the war
and the effects it had on Value of the US Dollar. The effects that the
outbreak of SARS had on the japanese Yen. And other things that might
have effected the European Euro. I would need exact dates and the
change in the exchange rates whether rise or fall and by how much.

I'm interested in events in the last six months (1/1/03-5/13/03) that
would have effected the value of the US dollar versus the Japanese Yen
and the US dollar versus the European Euro. What I mean by value is
the exchange rate between the two countries. These events can be war,
trading laws (imports & exports), unemployment, crisis within one's
country, etc..

Hello and thank you for your interesting question.

I have compilied for you the daily exchange rates between dollars and
yen and dollars and euros, the percentage change from day to day, and
what was going on of interest in the world on a daily basis throughout
the period. Of course, how each event might have contributed to the
constantly shifting rates will be a matter of some speculation.

Google Answers has difficulty formatting tabular data, so please bear

part answer as follows:

Part I
Daily exchange of USD/JPY (i.e. how many dollars 1 yen will buy) and
the percent change in that exchange rate from the previous day. For
example, on Julian day 2452640, December 31, 2002, Tuesday, 1 yen
would buy 0.0084211 dollars. And the change in the exchange rate from
December 31, 2003 to Jan 2, 2003 was
(.0083432-.0084211)/.0084211 = -0.93%

Of course, correlating the day's events with the day's exchange rate

The events which you gave are quite useful but I would need events
which correspond directly too or cause the increase and decrease in
the US, Japan and Europe exchange rates. The war in the US when it
started what was the exchange rate, the outbreak or SARS in Japan and
how the exchange dropped. These are the type of events I need.

OR how certain events that occured in these countries directly
affected the exchange rates of their country.

Hello again.

I can compile for you the big events that have taken place within each
country but all commentary on the recent fall of the dollar concludes
that it is macroeconomic forces (trade deficits, speculative trends,
US unwillingness to support the dollar) and not day-to-day events that
are driving the outcome.

-----------------
For example:

May 24:
Economists said the euro's rise Friday was caused less by any breaking
news than by the same factors that have made it go up in recent days -
chief among them a perception on financial markets that the United
States is perfectly happy to see the dollar go down.
"I haven't seen any news that explains why it's up... it's just the
ongoing factors that are pushing it in that direction," said economist
Julian von Landesberger at HVB Group in Munich.

[W]hy the declining dollar?
The central reason is the large and persistent deficit in US trade
with the rest of the world.
The current account deficit - which includes trade in goods and
services and some other payments - was about half a trillion dollars
last year, 5% of the US economy.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2706811.stm

Euro strength is really dollar weakness
The Federal Reserve left its benchmark US interest rates unchanged at
a four-decade low of 1.25 percent, but signalled the economy still
faced further weakness. The euro rallied to match its life high
against the yen and hit a four-year peak versus the dollar as the
European Central Bank’s decision to keep interest rates on hold
maintained the currency’s appeal as a yield earner.

Euro set to rise higher against the US dollar
The coming week is likely to be another nerve-wracking one for
traders, with central banks in the United States, United Kingdom and
Europe meeting to decide on monetary policy. The euro looks poised to
make further gains in the week ahead, as investors disappointed with
the meagre returns offered in the United States and Japan are likely
to keep up their appetite for other higher yielding foreign assets.
http://www.ameinfo.com/news/Detailed/23411.html

Two basic reasons appear to explain the dollar's recent slide. The
first is the record current account deficit of almost $500 billion
that the United States is experiencing. This deficit reflects the
massive imbalance between imports and exports of goods and services.
Financing it requires net inflows of foreign capital to the United
States on the order of $1.5 billion a day if the deficit is not to
exert downward pressure on the dollar.
To be sure, throughout the second half of the 1990s, the dollar gained
in strength even as the United States was experiencing historically
high current account deficits. But it rose on the back of huge amounts
of foreign capital being drawn to invest in a buoyant U.S. economy.
After the collapse of U.S. equity markets early in 2000, this country
progressively lost its allure as a magnet for investment.
A second, though lesser factor in the dollar's recent slide is an
apparent change in foreign central banks' preference for the
greenback. This appears to be particularly the case among Middle
Eastern central banks following the war in Iraq. The importance of the
attitude of foreign central banks toward the dollar is underlined by
the fact that approximately 40 percent of the U.S. current account
deficit is financed by official purchases of U.S. Treasury paper. This
compares with only 15 percent a few years ago.

The dollar plunged against the euro to its lowest level since the
European currency's second day of trading in 1999, spurred by
lingering speculation the U.S. is content to see the dollar fall to
spur the economy.

Few people can actually justify the current appreciation of the Euro
against the Dollar or the Sterling. And of course, similar to all
other bubbles, there are commentators who can identify, albeit
ex-post, the one indicator that can support their decision to invest.
Today, it seems that the reason Euro is popular is that everyone has
recognized that the economies it represents are in no worse shape than
others. For example, www.bbc.co.uk/news stated on May the 9th,
"..there seems to be a growing perception both that Europe is not that
much worse-off than some other regions, and that policy-makers would
like to see the euro gain in strength."

Market watchers predict that the US dollar will resume its slide (see
IT, 5/19/03). This view is further reinforced by the weak-dollar’s
contribution to the Fed’s anti-deflation campaign, as well as relative
current account positions (vis-a-vis Europe).

But anyway, we aim to please. Can you be more specific about what
events in Japan, Germany, etc. you want to see? The timeline that I
gave you in my original answer seems to cover the SARS outbreak and
high points of the Iraq war. Do you want me to track down employment
rate trends during the period? Social unrest?

I was rereading your clarification request and at least as to Sars and
the Iraq war I think the info is already there.

For example, if you search the answer for SARS, you'll find
Mar. 13 Hong Kong First alert over SARS
and the Yen exchange rate for the week following is
2452712,"2003/03/13","Thu",0.0084532 -0.95%
2452713,"2003/03/14","Fri",0.0084334 -0.23%
2452716,"2003/03/17","Mon",0.0084469 0.16%
2452717,"2003/03/18","Tue",0.0084120 -0.41%
2452718,"2003/03/19","Wed",0.0083234 -1.05%
2452719,"2003/03/20","Thu",0.0083313 0.09%
2452720,"2003/03/21","Fri",0.0082344 -1.16%
So actually the dollar dropped in value from .00845 to .00823 even as
the outbreak began.

You can find similar correlations by searching the timeline for Iraq
and looking up the corresponding exchange rates.
