Does anybody know of a charitable oprganization that would like to
have used software? I've got all sorts of stuff ranging from MS Office
to an unopened copy of The Sims. I hate to just chuck it all down the
trash chute, as it might be useful to somebody. It'd be great if I
could locate somebody in the Boston area (since that's where I live)
who would like to have it, but that's not essential; I'll box it up
and ship it.

Greetings Headdoc:

I have located a few possibilities for your donations and I must
commend your choice to donate these programs. I believe that many
people will benefit from your generosity. :)

I found the Center for Instructional Technologies at
http://www.wgby.org/edu/cit/software.html where it is stated "New
software is always being added! If you or your company would like to
donate software to CIT, contact the director of CIT. We welcome your
support!"

An article I found regarding software donations mentioned "...Boston
Aging Concern’s GrandFamilies® House, the first housing project in the
nation addressing the housing and social needs of grandparents raising
grandchildren, and Boston Community Centers, a unique network of
service facilities for city residents."

I then searched the contact info for the programs. My father is a
senior and senior citizen centers in general are an excellent place to
donate software. Most centers have a computer/Internet area for
self-training and easy web use.

I located:

The Boston Youth Zone at

"Find out about the many programs that are available such as Youth
Alternative Education, Girls Programs, Youth Connections Programs,
Streetworker Program, GED Testing, Computer Learning Centers and BNBL"

search Boston community programs
http://www.cityofboston.gov/bcyf/
This includes adult education, after school programs, computer
education, etc. and you'll be able to easily perform searches
specific to your area of Boston at

I haven't tried to contact anybody on the list yet, but I appreciate
all the work that went into putting the answer together. Great job,
and thanks! I would tip the Researcher, but since this question was
about a non-profit organization I figure that money would be better
directed toward a charity; don't you agree, "journalist-ga"? ;-)

Commendable offer, and a commendable answer. There are literally
thousands of organizations around the USA alone that could use
something like this, and I would strongly encourage anyone with older
or surplus software to seek out charitable and volunteer organizations
in their local area (my own bias, for example, would be towards
Tucson, AZ, so that covers everything from Parents Anonymous to Old
Pueblo Trolley.)

Again, commendable, and a great answer.
