I travelled to Australia last summer and loved the beer there, so I
want to know if it's possible to get any authentic Australian beer in
California, USA. This does not include Fosters, as it is actually
manufactured in Canada (look on the label) and is not widely consumed
by native Australians, as I understand.

The two beers I'd most like to get are James Boags and James Squire.
I'd also accept XXXX, Victorian Bitter, Cascade, Hahn, Toohey's,
Crown.

I contacted the company that makes Boags and they said they only ship
a minumum of 50,000 cartons to distributors and because of prohibitive
shipping and customs costs, they can't ship small quantities to
individuals. It may be different for other companies, but I guess
what I'm really looking for is a store or a pub in California that
sells Australian beer.

I live in Los Angeles, so the closer to L.A. the better.

I would bet you can get Aussie beer from the "The Australian Pub"!
http://www.australianpub.com/
I have sent them an email - when i get a reply i'll let you know what
kind of beers they serve and if there are any other places in CA where
you can find Australian beer.

How 'bout a brewing kit for Australian beer, mate?

Clarification of Question by uniace-ga on 19 Jun 2003 21:00 PDT
I called the Australian Pub and they have Cooper's (an Australian ale
that comes in three varieties in a bottle) but nothing else beside
Fosters (which, again, doesn't count). I didn't try Cooper's when I
was down under, but it's more than I've found anywhere else. The
person I talked to said they have trouble importing Aussie beer and
she doesn't know of any other places that have any (there used to be
another Australian Pub but it shut down).

As for an Australian brewing kit, well, the point was that the
Australian beer I tried was GOOD. If I tried making my own, let's
just say I can easily imagine it leaving much to be desired. =)

It would still be nice to find a place that has at least one of the
specific beers I was looking for. But I guess if such a place doesn't
exist, we won't be able to find it. Here's hoping though!

Coopers is very tasty. It's available online at BevMo:

BevMo: Coopers Best Extra Stout

BevMo: Coopers Sparkling Ale
http://www.bevmo.com/productinfo.asp?sku=00000029937&area=home&category=&sid=03&find_spec=coopers&leftmenu=

BevMo: Coopers Pale Ale
http://www.bevmo.com/productinfo.asp?sku=00000029938&area=home&category=&sid=03&find_spec=coopers&leftmenu=

I prefer the Extra Stout, myself, but the ales are quite nice also.

Hello there

First rule of thumb: Never drink any beer you can see through. I'm
adamant about that.

mmmm....beer

Our lager,
Which art in barrels,
Hallowed be thy drink.
Thy will be drunk, (I will be drunk), At home as it is in the tavern.
Give us this day our foamy head,
And forgive us our spillage,
As we forgive those who spill against us.
And lead us not to incarceration,
But deliver us from hangovers,
For thine is the beer, the bitter, and the lager

Hi there,

I also live in Los Angeles (by way of Perth, Western Australia).

We have been able to buy Hahn Premium (6 pack of bottles) from Trader
Joes in Torrance.
I was bummed because I wanted to get some for my Dad and brother when
they came over to visit in July. We went to the shop in Manhattan
Beach and they didn't have any :(

They did have Aussie lamb in the freezer and crumpets in the bakery section though.

Cheers!

Haven't found any XXXX, but check out the beerfromoz link above. It's
just Toohey's New, but a good number of bars and restaurants are
stocking it now, especially in southern California. Looks like most
if not all of the Outback Steakhouses have it (I threw back 2 at an
Outback and it was great). I'll have to check Trader Joe's for Hahn.
I've occasionally seen a Toohey's (Old I think) at Cost Plus in the
"World 10-packs" of beer there. But now you can order Toohey's new
online from that website, it looks like.
