Hi Gadgetjamz ~
Isn't it funny how sometimes these subjects come up in groups. That's
just the case with the subject of gift registries and wish lists.
One of the groups of very wise web designers was looking for the same
thing you are seeking, a gift registry/wish list that can be installed
on a website, without sharing. The other group was discussing why
something that seemed such a good idea never really caught on.
The latter discussion (why it never really caught on) has to do with
public perception (which would be a whole new question matter if you
are interested). I believe any negative connotations can be changed
with positive marketing strategies.
The former discussion turned up just one recommendation: Ansur Web
Services' Gift Registry System.
- http://www.ansur.net/gift.shtml
A search of Google, Alta Vista and Yahoo only seemed to reinforce the
notion that this is the one that will meet your requirements:
* Runs on your Linux server
* Allows the customer to save the list
* Requires one-time payment for purchase - which is $99
The only requirement I had a question about was "works with our custom
php shopping cart", so I wrote to their service email address.
You didn't define what you meant by "works with", and since by the
nature of the software all one has to do is to "point" or "browse"
their gift registry choices, I took the liberty of asking if it could
be tied in with your shopping cart to make the purchase.
The answer I got was as follows:
"The answer is that yes, it could be done, but not without programming
expertise. Your shopping cart would have to be able to signal to the
Gift Registry program that a particular user wanted to enter a
particular item into the Gift Registry database. This would require
modifying the shopping cart code, as well as modifying the Gift
Registry program to allow this type of communication."
I am assuming you have access to your own programmers, since you have
a custom shopping cart, however, Ansur Web's response also indicated
they'd be happy to look at the code and give you a quote on
customizing their script for you.
Their support email address is available from the "contact us" link on
the site.
After looking at the website, I believe this may be what you are
seeking.
Search terms used:
==================
* gift registry
* wish list
Best of luck - I think it's a terrific idea.
