I am trying to find information about the Broughton Institute. I
believe that it was a mental health institute in North Carolina which
was operating around 1919. I am not absolutely sure about the name,
the spelling of the name, or the name of the place where it was
located. |

Do you believe that this institute was called Broughton in 1919? I
have found a mental health center in North Carolina which was
operating in 1919 and which was renamed Broughton in 1959. Could this
be the place you are looking for? If so, I can post an answer.

Yes, that is the correct institution. It is in Morganton, NC. I
believe that my grandfather, William Rainey Carroll, died there in
1919. He was an alcoholic and possibly had other health problems.
The family was extremely tight-lipped about this and now my father and
his siblings are all deceased. I realize that medical records are
pretty sacrosanct, but we (my brother and I) would love to have any
info. about the place and its methods at the time and any info. about
our grandfather would be gravy.

I have found some information on the Web about this institution from
1904, 1908, and 1910. I have also found two library sources for
reports by this institution from the time period that your grandfather
would have been there.
In case you don't have it, I have also found genealogical information
on your grandfather.
As for records, I can give you the contact information for the
libraries that have the hospital reports, as well as for the current
hospital. It's possible that these specific records are gone by now,
but perhaps you'll be fortunate and track them down.
Would this be a sufficient answer?
