Hello wirenut

Is there any chance any of the letters in "dve" could be something
else? The other words are all clear but I can't interpret "dve" (or
"due"). "Duw" might possibly make sense.

Any other clues you have might help.

Thanks - Leli

Dear wirenut,

I have found a picture of the door knocker, and now I can say for sure
that some minor reading mistakes occurred. Actually, the Flemish
phrase is: "Met peynen ove de weerelt". And that means: "With pain
over the world", or better: "Under pains through the world".

Here is the photo I used:

Since I am very familiar with Northern German, which is closely
related to Hollandish and Flemish, the translation was not a problem
to me.

I was hoping to get a simple answer but i never expected to see a
picture of the actual knocker.

I'm guessing that the comparable English idiom might be "carrying the
burdens of the world on their shoulders" or "shouldering the world's
burdens".
