Hi there,

Reciprocal Linking
------------------

First up, is something you should not do. Google tends to penalise
sites that participate in reciprocal linking:

"Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's
ranking or PageRank."

Seeing as link popularity is a big factor in Google's ranking system,
you can be sure that they look out for reciprocal linking. If it has
been done discreetly it is hard to prove, but your site quite
blatantly promotes it:

Much of your site has a PageRank of zero (although sometimes when I
reload the page I get a different PageRank). A zero generally
represents a penalty from Google (it's quite different from a blank
PageRank, which just means a PageRank hasn't been assigned). I suggest
that your first step is to:

a) Remove the pages that offer reciprocal links, and ask those that
are linking to you in a reciprocal manner to remove the links from
their sites

b) Email Google at help@google.com. Use a subject like "I have
corrected broken guidelines", so that it stands out as being
important. State that you did not realise you were doing anything
wrong. Detail what you have done to right the wrongs. Promise to
follow the guidelines in future.

c) Wait. I have heard of Google responding within a week, but
obviously they receive a lot of queries. More info, including a last
resort phone number, is here:

Home Page
---------

This is tricky. Looks versus search engine optimization. Search
engines like Google love text, and it is preferable to have text on
your home page, not just images and links. But on the other hand, it
looks great how it is. Your home page will normally be the one most
other sites link to, which means it is the most likely page to achieve
high rankings with. It can't achieve high rankings if there is no
content for Google to index.

Titles
------

Page titles are very important, much more than regular text on the
page. It is important to:

1) Make sure that each page has a unique title, that reflects the
content of the page.
2) Make the title as concise as possible, and target keywords that
searchers might use to find a site like yours
3) Don't say "Free UK Virtual Tours" in each title - no-one is going
to search for that phrase.

Open Directory
--------------

I see you are listed in Yahoo.
http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Communications_and_Networking/Internet_and_World_Wide_Web/Web_Site_Designers/By_Region/Countries/United_Kingdom/

Try to get listed in the Open Directory as well:

Focus
-----

As a fresh visitor to your site I cannot tell what the purpose is.
First impression has me thinking it has lots of general info and
pictures / postcards / virtual tours of Wales. But much of your site
seems to be about web design, web hosting etc.

You might want to consider reducing this site to an example of what
you can provide (as the name suggests), and creating a new site that
purely promotes your services.

The above should give you some food for thought.

Best wishes,
robertskelton-ga

Hi Robert,

Yes-that was a lot to digest-but your answer will have a fundamental
effect on the future shape of my website. Just a quickie though-is it
much better to have a keyword text link "Virtual Tours" to my home
page or use my WindowOnWales Logo?

Thanks, Eamonn Mc Greevy

Google places quite a bit of importance on the words used in a link.
Ideally you want links to your site containing the keyword or phrase
you wish to rank highly in Google for. That's up to you.

If you wish to improve your ranking for "Wales Web Design", for
example, ask people to link to you with this text:

Window on Wales Web Design

Logos aren't nearly as good. However, if someone must link to your
site via a logo, make sure the image's ALT attribute has the keywords
or keyphrase in it.
