Should I sell my Audi S4 2000 year model car before the 3 year warranty
expires? It's 2.2 years old and has had a few problems. How much can I sell it
for and what approach should I take?

Hi richardsgreg!

If your 2000 Audi S4 is practical for your needs, and not a financial burden,
then I recommend keeping the Audi S4. It is a fast, quiet, and clean car with
modern features and wonderful reviews from its drivers. However, if the Audi
has lost your interest, I will recommend a few methods to help you sell your

Let's estimate a price for your used vehicle. There are some valuable resources
to obtain a quote for your Audi S4. Some on-line sites require specific
information about your car and location before showing a price, so I located a
ballpark figure for you without getting to personal. is a trusted
source that lists a true market value for cars based on estimates of current
average selling prices. According to their study, the dealer retail price is
$29,557; you will get $25,081 from a Dealer Trade In; or $27,409 for a private
party sale.

According to the Audi of America website, your warranty is "transferable to
subsequent private owners for a nominal fee of $150 per transfer."

" FACT:
You get more for your car selling it yourself, than trading it to a car
dealer. If it's < 4 years old, dealers give you at least $2000 less than
market value for it, so they can dump it on the wholesale market. Banks won't
finance cars > 4 years old, they're worthless to dealers.
If your car is over 4 years old, dealers give you only 25% of fair market
If a dealer offers market value for your trade-in, they are making up for it on
the back side of the deal in the form of full retail price, or wasted dealer
extras. Anyone who thinks a dealer is really giving them market value for
their trade in is living a pipe dream "

Car Buying

If you find an appropriate price and decide the car does not suit your needs,
sell your car in a private party sale. Organizing the vehicle paperwork,
cleaning the interior and exterior, and performing a maintenance check is a
great place to start this process. Once the car looks marvelous, and you still
want to sell it, consider buying a 'For Sale' sign for your car. This is a low
cost method to the car sale market and will interest prospective buyers that
drive the same roads you do. If that method does not provide you with any
takers, you may choose to place a newspaper ad to sell your car. However, this
option would limit your prospective buyers to newspaper readers. To attract the
largest market for your car sale, use one of the many on-line forums. is one of the many wonderful on-line resources. You can place a
classified ad for under $30 that will be available for prospective buyers on
four sites:,, and;AWEB

Whether you decide to keep or sell your car, be sure you do it with confidence.
Don't let a prospective buyer talk you out of your desired price. This is your
car to sell, and you should do it with pride!

I thought the answer was great. Only thing that might ahve added value
was some depth in the area of where to best sell the car. I didn't ask
that though, I asked if I should sell it, and they covered it well.

Do you know if the warranty is transferrable? Are the problems covered by the
warranty or not?

First, you need to determine whether or not you are willing to put up with the
problems that your S4 is giving you. If you are, then it makes a lot of sese
to keep it, because they are great cars, probably one of the best cars out
there. Few cars offer the level of performance, safety, luxury, and style.
Additionaly, only a few manufacturers offer the same level of warranty
(basically everything is covered except for tires). Since any problem you
encounter is going to be covered by your warranty, you simply have to decide if
you are willing to put up with the trips to the dealer. Given my experience
with Audi of America, this is often a painful experience.

Without knowing how many miles you have on your car, I would estimate that you
could sell your for between $33,000 and $36,000. Kelly Blue Book gives a 2000
S4 with 30k miles a Private Party Value of $34,350. Private Party value
represents what you might expect to pay for a used car when purchasing from a
private party. It may also represent the value you might expect to receive when
selling your own used car to another private party.

You might try selling it via private party and getting a 2002 S4(they worked
out many of the problems , but they are difficult to find right now. You might
also look at the 2002 A4. The new V6 model only has 30hp less than the S4.

You could also sell it private party and look for a clean 2001 S4 which is also
improved over the 2000.

Hope this helps, feel free to follow up with any other questions you may have,
or additionaly information that may help in your decision.

oops...forgot one thing. The warranty is transferable, which will help you
sell it to a private party.
