I say, it's a bird nest; made by birds in the spring for their young.

On the other hand, it could just as eaisly be a wasp nest or bee hive.

If it's a wasp nest (etc) then the "other substance" could be saliva.

For that matter, it could be a squirrel's nest, or the nest of any
nesting creature. Not a lot of information to make an educated guess.

Good luck with the contest.

The answer could be "muka," which is made from leaves, pine needles,
and branches. This substance is used in Eastern Europe as a feed
supplement for livestock.

"Each year Latvia is manufacturing 200 000 tons of 'muka', a vitamin
meal made from pine needles."

http://www.fao.org/docrep/n9800e/n9800e08.htm

"In Russia, a livestock feed supplement called "muka" is made from
needles, leaves, twigs and branches less than one-fourth inch in
diameter. This material when dried and finely ground has been included
in the feed of chickens, dairy and beef cattle and pigs in quantities
of five to ten per cent of the rations. Livestock productivity is
reported to be improved when feed includes these materials."

I can see the advertising campaign now...

"Eat a bowl of Muka first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will
happen to you all day."

Yeah...my guess is she won't be able to tell you how well a nice warm
bowl of "muka" goes with a demitasse of Latvian coffee first thing in
the morning, but then the Latvian cattle probably can't either.
