I recently heard on a PSA that my county, Broward County, burns up to
90% of the county's waste and turns it into electricty it then sells
to Florida Power and Light.

During a recent discussion of cloth vs disposable diapers, I noted
this, and was refuted with this:

<blockquote>According to the most recent EPA figures I could find, it
looks like less than 20% of the nation's municipal solid waste is
incinerated, while more than 50% is landfilled (I found some
information here -- EPA Waste Information). Even if more than that is
incinerated, that creates issues regarding air emissions and disposal
of the resulting ash.

I did find this:

http://www.broward.org/iwi02200.htm

which gives a nice overview of the program, but nothing that might
indicate why they'd claim a figure like that. It caught my ear because
I was re-organizing my house and life at the time, trying to make
recycling easier on us.

Possibly the PSA was using the advertising technique known as "weasel
words" by saying "up to 90%." This, of course, technically covers any
amount less than 90%.

possibly ... I'm not quoting it exactly, but the number 90% was in
there ... I'm wondering, as the notes linked above claim 95% of the
energy made goes into the public grid, that's what the 90% was for???

But I'm rather certain that they meant a high high amount of garbage
is disposed of that way, based on my rememberd reaction ...
