I really would like to know how the pulsating of the sleep light of
Apples iBook is controled. An analog hardware circuit, the BIOS or a
MacOS X kernel module?

I could swear it pulses slower/faster from time to time. A friend of
mine says Apple implemented an Artificial Life algorithm which
controls the light. Are there any sources which corroborate this
theory? If not: What other variables exert influence on the pulse?

I am not familiar with the technical terms but
from what I've read it seems to be a Light Controller or in your case,
an Analog Hardware circuit.

I did not find any mention of an Artificial Life Algorithm or how the
the pulsating light is conotrolled.

Please let me know if this helps you.
