I am not able to connect to http://netmail.verizon.net from my
computer only.
I get the message "The page cannot be displayed". I am able to connect
to all other sites on the internet. I have windows 98 with internet
explorer 6.0 or higher. I also tried netscape and got the message,
"the connection was refused when attempting to contact
netmail.verizon.net. I am able to connect to this site from other
computers but not from my computer. I have verizon dsl. This same
problem happened about three weeks ago and then went away by itself
after four days. Now it happened again.

Hi rqp-ga!

Before I start with my answer, let me remind you that when using this
service for computer related help, sometimes you may not receive a
solution right away. As with most technical related issues, it is
often a "process of elimination" in order to fix the problem. I will
recommend a few things for you to try, however if these things do not
solve the issue, just request a clarification and let me know and I
will continue working on your problem until it's solved.

Can you get to the page by launching your browser and in the URL bar
typing in 206.46.170.9 ?

The first thing I would recommend is deleting your temporary internet
files and cookies for both IE and Netscape.
For IE, bring up the browser, go to tools>internet options> then hit
the "delete cookies" button, and the "delete files" button.
For Netscape, bring up the browser, go to edit>preferences click on
"privacy & security", then click on cookies, and then "manage stored
cookies". It will bring up a new window, from there click on remove
all cookies. After that, click on advanced, then cache, then hit the
button that says "clear cache".
If you know which cookie belongs to netmail.verizion.net, you can try
just deleting that one.

The problem you are having can also occur if you have a hosts file
with an incorrect entry.

Look for a file in the C:\Windows folder by the name of HOSTS (there
should be a HOSTS.SAM file also). If HOSTS file exists, you have setup
web site blocking, so open the file with Notepad/Wordpad and search
for a netmail.verizion.net (206.46.170.9). Any/all sites listed in the
HOSTS file will give the standard page can not be displayed error.

You can edit the Hosts file and disable all lines that refer to the
Web site Internet Protocol (IP) addresses you are unable to view. To
do so, place a number sign (#) at the beginning of each line that
contains the IP address of the Web site you are unable to view.

You might also check to make sure your firewall isn't blocking the
website. Try disabling it for a moment and see if you are able to
connect to the site then.

If after following these suggestions, you find your problem solved, go
ahead and feel free to rate my answer accordingly. However if your are
still having the same problem after trying these steps, let me know in
a request for clarification and I will continue to troubleshoot the
issue with you.

Thanks so much!

I tried everything you suggested and the problem still exists.

rqp-ga,
Thanks for letting me know your results thus far!
Might I get some more information from you please?
Is this the only page you can not get to?
Are you using any of the following?
1. Firewall
2. Virus protection
3. Web accelerator (such as market score)
Is this your home computer we are reffering to?
Did you find a hosts file? And if so did you have to edit anything in it?
Thank you again!

To chellphill-ga
1. I have zone alarm.
2. I have Norton virus protection.
3. I have Ram Booster.
4. I found a hosts file. I did not have to edit anything.

Now at 4:24 AM on 06-21-03 I was able to connect to
netmail.verizon.net again.
I did not do anything and your answer did not help me. I had to use my
brother's computer last night to get the information that I needed
from my e-mails.

I am very sorry that you felt that my answer was not adequate. When
asking a question regarding a computer problem, in most instances the
answer will be a set of "suggestions" to try, rather than a definitive
answer. There are usually too many variables with each individual
situation to give an absolute explanation. Hence the reason I
emphasized that if after trying what I suggested, if you were still
experiencing difficulties, that you let me know in a request for
clarification so that we might continue to trouble shoot the issue.

I can certainly understand how frustrating it can be to try and
troubleshoot a computer problem. To go through a process of trying
several different things until something finally works, when all that
we want is an immediate resolution can be very trying to say the
least. However, as I stated in my answer, most technical related
problems are solved through a "process of elimination".
From your comment I see that the problem seems to have resolved
itself. And hopefully, it will remain working. Again, I would like to
offer my apologies for not having the chance to solve your issue.

Best of luck to you,
chellphill-ga
Reason this answer was rejected by rqp-ga:
The answer did not solve my problem. It was not really an answer but
just
some suggestions to try that did not work to solve my problem. The
problem went away by itself on the day after I tried everything in the
answer with no
success. I had to use another computer to get the information I needed
from the site that I could not connect to from my computer.

Test basic connectivity to that domain name. Open up your command
prompt, by clicking on start, selecting RUN, and entering the word
command in the box. Click OK and a command prompt will open. At the
command prompt, type the following: "ping netmail.verizon.net" (note:
quotation marks are used to signify the command to use, dont use the
quotation marks when entering the command) and tell me what the output
is. then type, "ping 206.46.170.9" and tell me what the output is of
that. The PING utility is used to test basic connectivity and will be
able to tell if your computer can even reach that particular site.

Those results indicate that your computer does not have even basic
connectivity to that web server. Are you able to access other sites
on the internet using that same computer? Also, do you have a
firewall installed on your computer?
