Hi aaz!
It's easier than you think. In fact, when I found the instructions, I
couldn't believe it was that easy so I tried it on my computer. It
worked...
NetMeeting is hidden on XP until you activate and configure it.
To enable NetMeeting, perform the following steps:
Go to the Start menu and select Run. Then, type:
"Conf" (without the quotes)
...and click OK. --It's a miracle, but if you wait a few seconds, the
NetMeeting Configuration Wizard starts. WHen it does, click NEXT
Enter your personal details and click NEXT again.
Select listing directory options and click NEXT.
Select your connection media and click NEXT.
Configure the "shortcut options" to your liking and click NEXT.
Click NEXT to configure "volume options" and NEXT again to confirm
that the microphone works.
Click FINISH.
Then, when you want to begin a NetMeeting session, start NetMeeting
(you can either run conf.exe again to start the application, or select
shortcut you created during the configuration process), click the
Phone button, and enter the IP address of the machine you want to
communicate with.
Activate NetMeeting

It's so easy that I did it BEFORE I asked the question where I wrote:
"... I have located NetMeeting program and put it on my desktop..."
(thru Run-conf, that's the only way.)
When I use NetMeeting now through IP address, (which I did also before
I asked the quetion; in Windows98, email and IP address both worked;
but in XP email address does not work) the two parties can see each
other but cannot talk.
Cynthia, can you REALLY use it with somebody, then give me advice?
I appreciate the trouble you took but I didn't get the answer. If you
need to get more info (eg, regarding settings on the NetMeeting), pl
ask me.
If I get the answer and feel it involved more work than anticipated, I
will make up to you with a tip. Best regards

Hi aaz,
Thanks for your patience, I don't work weekends...
I think, upon reading your dilemma, that another program is using your
audio and not allowing NetMeeting to take control of it. You'll need
to determine what is holding your audio hostage and disable it prior
to starting NetMeeting.
Did you verify proper operation of both the output sound and input
microphone audio? This verifies local operation only.
Are you set to Full-Duplex?
Do you have a firewall or router?
I have a couple links that might help you troubleshoot the problem:

How do I check if another program is using up my audio?
I did exit all programs before starting Net Meeting.
Regards
PS
I am not behind a firewall; I have full duplex; the sound input/
output are fine. After all, I can have an audio conversation through
MSN Messenger.
You may consider adding in all your first answers that you don't work
on weekends.

Hi again aaz,
In your system tray, hold your mouse over the icons. As the name of
the running programs pops up, determine if any of these it=ems use the
speakers. If they do, then right-click the item and EXIT.
I would use the link below to isolate the problem. This link should
help:

I do close all the programs whose icons I can see in the taskbar (the
bar on the bottom from 'start' in the left to time display at the
right.)
What is System Tray please?

I think by System Tray you meant the Task Bar at the very bottom.

The system tray is the small area in the lower right corner of the
desktop next to the clock with the icons showing what programs are
running at start-up. It's to the right of the Task Bar, level with it.
Across the bottom of the desktop you have the Start Button, Quick
Launch (if you use it), the task bar (with open programs you are
using), and then the system tray with the small icons. Those icons
show what programs are running in the background. It is there that I
need you to hold the mouse over each icon to determine if one of those
programs is using the speakers.
Also, did you try this link?

Is it possible that Microsoft has disabled it to get us use solely
Messenger in which NetMeeting is now integrated? That's the opinion of
a geek Hong Kong friend of mine.

Hi again aaz,
It's difficult at best to troubleshoot computer problems in the Google
Answers forum, and to make it easier, I really need direct answers to
my questions before answering more questions. I don't think Messenger
has disabled the audio --because it IS integrated with NetMeeting.
That would defeat the purpose of integration. It's more likely that
another, unrelated program is using the audio. We need to determine
what that may be.
What programs do you have running in the system tray?

In the system tray I can see the following icons: NetMeeting,
Messenger, Volume Control (it's not mute; it works fine), Link Port
(for USB hub), iTouch (the Logitech wireless keyboard/ mouse attached
to my notebook).
Messenger's WebCam Conversation works fine with all these programs.
I did state once: "I do close all the programs whose icons I can see
in the taskbar (the bar on the bottom from 'start' in the left to time
display at the
right.)"
Cynthia, I appreciate your perseverance but I agree with you that
Google Answers is not the best forum to solve the glitch (if it's a
glitch); it's not worth your time. I have sent an email to Microsoft a
week ago. They did not repond. I will learn to live with MSN's webcam
conversation feature. Its video cannot be enlarged as much as
NetMeeting's but it's more user friendly. Again many thanks. So,
bye-bye for good on this question.
