Hello.

Weather is typically cold-to-mild during those months. Expect rain
about one-third of the time.

See: USA Today Climate: Rome, Italy
http://www.usatoday.com/weather/climate/wrome.htm

USA Today Climate: Florency, Italy
http://www.usatoday.com/weather/climate/europe/italy/wflorence.htm

Florence Tourism information :
http://www.arca.net/tourism/info/clothing.htm

Also, from my copy of the guidebook "Let's Go: Rome"...
January
Average low: 39 degrees (F)
Average high: 55 degrees (F)
Average rainfall for month: 3.3 inches
Percentage of rainy days: 34%

February
Average low: 41 degrees (F)
Average high: 57 degrees (F)
Average rainfall for month: 2.9 inches
Percentage of rainy days: 35%
source: "Let's Go Rome," available from bookstores such as Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0312305893/

search strategy: florence climate , rome climate , average rain

I hope this helps. Have a great trip!

sorry about that typo:
"... Florence, Italy..."

Also, when I say, "cold-to-mild," I mean relative "cold-to-mild" for
Italy. Of course, 40 degrees F in the winter would be considered
warm in many parts of the world.
