To answer your question required several steps.
Step 1: Determine how many shares of AT&T you would own pre-1984.
Given that your AT&T stock was worth $5,000 on 06/30/1965, I had to
find the closing price for the stock that day to determine how many
shares you would own.
As you can see from the following page of stock quotes, AT&T (stock
symbol "T") closed at $67.37 on 06/30/1965. That means, you would have
owned 74.217 shares in AT&T.

As you can see from the following page, no stock splits occurred
between 06/30/1965 and 12/31/83, the day before the infamous "Baby
Bell" Divestiture.

This, of course, means that you would still have had 74.217 shares of
AT&T before the 1984 Divestiture.
Step 2: Determine what stock in what companies you would have received
between 01/01/1984 and 06/20/2003.
This is, by far, the most challenging step. So challenging, in fact,
that the only reasonable way to calculate it is to purchase an AT&T
Divestiture program specifically set uo to follow the 36 adjustments
for spin-offs and 24 adjustments for stock splits that have happened
in that period.
The most reliable program for this calculation that I found was the
AT&T Divestiture Basis Tracker from Denver Tax Software.

So, your original stock value of $5,000 would be worth $19,085.93
today. It would have, of course, been worth *significantly* more a few
years ago - before the big "market meltdown" occurred.
[Note: Now, you need to keep in mind that this is a largely
"theoretical" calculation. Since you started off with a fractional
number of shares (74.217), you ended up getting very fractional
numbers of subsequent stocks. In many cases, when splits and spin-offs
occurred, you probably would have had to round-down the number of
stock and get a little cash as well.]
