Hello, I use the web-based email Hotmail and I experience this problem
on the web (not a POP account, etc). I go into the "Contacts" window
and attempt to EDIT an existing Individual and 98% of the time I fail
and see an error in the status window at the bottom of the browser and
it says "error on page" and there is a yellow triangle with an
exclamation mark. I have had this problem on multiple days and have
shut my PC down in between those attempts. My browser is Explorer
Ver6. OS is WinME.
I have a moderatly large number of contacts in this address book.
Approx 250. Something that also seems a bit odd is that when I click
on a box in front of a name to select it, there is a approx 4 second
delay before the check mark appears. I have a fast cable modem
connection so this seems a bit odd.
Any suggestions would be helpful. However I won't feel comfortable
PAYING for an answer that refers me to other websites/resources to
look for the final answer.
Best Regards,
Steve

Hello Steve923,

Could you tell me if you have the default options set in your browser?
You can set back the options by going to the options-security tab in
your browser, and then set it to default-level for the web. If the
set-back button is not active, it means you already have the default
options set.

Testing the Hotmail problem with Internet Explorer 5, I could only
re-create the delay when clicking on the check-box, but I could edit
with no error message appearing.

Also, can you check what the exact error message is?
You might need to go to your options, and the advanced tab, and check
the "activate debugging" and "show errors on page" fields.

Have you already tried to email the Hotmail customer support?
On the Hotmail homepage, in the lower right, there's the link "Report
a Bug", which will take you to another page where you can enter all
the exact data.

Hi J_Phillip,
Thanks for your thoughtful ideas. I have tried alot of them
and details are below. Unfortunately at this time nothing has solved
the
problem.
Regards, Steve
==================

I RESET my browser settings to default. You are correct
that the option to reset goes away after that has been done.
After doing that I re-booted my PC just incase that was necessary.
Unfortunately there was no improvement in the Hotmail problem.
Good idea though.

Yes I have provided a detailed message to Hotmail via their "report a
bug" option. Did that about 1-1/2 days ago. Don't know whether to
expect anything from that.

Prior to receiving an error and when moving my mouse over an
individual's name
the command to be executed is shown in the lower left status window.
An example is: javascript:DoEdit('hotmail','ADDR649a3c64-7302-4b9c-95bc-95bf2eb7c5ea')
This indicates to me the problem could be related to running Java code
and/or scripting. In my Internet Options I looked for everything I
could find that said anything about JAVA or scripting and they all
seemed to be set to "enable".
Under security I found Microsoft VM -> Java Permissions.
The default was "High safety" and I tried changing to Low, then
exited/closed my browser and went back and saw no improvement.
I also found the following options and both are enabled: "Java
logging", "Script debugging".
I looked throughout all the Internet Options and was not able to find
something called "show errors on page" or "activate debugging".
I'm guessing they have been changed in IE6 versus IE5 which I guess
you are using. But I did find "Display a notification about any
script error" and think it did what you wanted. Here is the detailed
error message.

************
Problems with this webpage might prevent it from being displayed
properly
or functioning properly.

Line: 2296
Char: 1
Error: Object Expected
Code: 0
URL: http://lw12fd.law12.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/addresses?
curmbox=f00000001&a= (long string of numbers)

*****************
[note: I chose not to transcribe the "long string of numbers"]
In retrospect it would have been good to include this in the bug
report submitted to Hotmail. I might submit a 2nd report which
includes this detailed error description.

Another idea I just tried was to shut down the firewall I use which is
ZoneAlarm.
That did not help.

Hi Steve,

Two ideas which might help:

- As a temporary workaround, did you think about installing/ using
Outlook Express (as you may know it can be connected to Hotmail)?

- Did you ever try to click the "Edit" button after checking a
contact, and do you also get the error message then? (I suppose at the
moment you edit by clicking on the person's name?)

I would like to clarify some issues, but please be warned anything
from here on will likely not lead lead to a direct solution.

- "Java" settings are not related to the JavaScript error. JavaScript
(or JScript, as Microsoft has to call it) is part of the
ActiveScripting options.

- Yes, the options do change with each browser version, and added to
that I use a German browser, which is why it's a bit hard to tell
exactly where to look. But you already found the correct option to
show the error-message.

- JavaScript is executed client-side, which practically means speed of
connection/ firewall etc. don't have to do with the bug.

- Yes, you probably will have to wait a while before Hotmail support
returns to you via email.

- At the moment, even if I would check Hotmail's JavaScript (and the
specific line), even _if_ I could debug it, of course I couldn't save
it back to their server -- in other words, I wouldn't be able to solve
the problem.

- I checked my own account again, and also get the DoEdit(...)
function, but it works for me. I even checked the DoEdit function
itself from the source (since JavaScript is client-side, as I
mentioned, you can read it) but noticed I got a German-version of the
script (and can't really see an error here).

Further questions:

- Did you ever try to click the "Edit" button after checking a
contact, and do you also get the error message then? I suppose at the
moment you edit by clicking on the person's name?

- Did the page already load with errors? (You can see this in the
status bar on the bottom.)

- Did the page finish loading?

- Do you have the latest updates on your browser? Did you install any
second-party add-ons?

Hi J_Phillip,
I have Outlook Express installed. Most of the time I access the
hotmail account via a POP instead of going on the web. Unfortunately
sometimes it is necessary to login to the hotmail account via the web.
It has been a while (maybe 4 months) since I had tried editing names
in the contact list while logged in on the web.

I have tried initiating the "edit" with both methods. I have clicked
directly on the person's name and also tried checking the box then
selecting "edit".

When I first enter the "contacts" page there are no error messages and
the page loads completely. When I place a check mark to select one of
the persons there is still no error message. When I initiate an edit
the error occurs VERY rapidly.

I confirmed that my software is updated. I use the automated "Windows
Update" software and it prompts me every day to check for updates.
WindowsME is running the latest update. Internet Explorer has the
latest (818529 Service Pack 1). I don't know if it was necessary but
loaded the "latest scripting engine" version 5.6. It is described as:

This download installs Microsoft® Windows® Script containing Visual
Basic® Script Edition (VBScript.) Version 5.6, JScript® Version 5.6,
Windows Script Components, Windows Script Host 5.6, and Windows Script
Runtime Version 5.6.

I don't think I am running any 3-party software programs? Although
I'm not clear what is defined as 3rd party software. I try not to
install much in the way of special software. Don't think I've
installed much software in the
last year?

I went to my roommate's computer and do not have any problem editing
contacts in Hotmail. He is running Internet Explorer 6 and WindowsXP.

My best idea right now is to go on a message board for javascript
experts and present my situation. In my searching today I found a
message/question board called www.experts-exchange.com.

If you don't have any other suggestions I don't have a problem paying
you.
You put some time into attempting an answer. I'm not sure if other
people might come along with a solution, in which case I think this
case would be closed so they wouldn't bother to help? Is it possible
to leave this question open for a couple days then pay you? This is
getting confusing.

Regards, Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for wanting to pay me, yes, we can just wait a couple of days
before I move my information to the answer spot. But since my
information didn't result in a solution for you, don't feel obliged to
pay me.

The problem here is even _if_ I'd find the JScript bug, it'd be up to
Microsoft to debug it and update their files, so I think the best
still was you reporting the bug.

Another place where you can report your idea (maybe to get additional
"views") would be the Microsoft support newsgroups:

microsoft.public.msn.discussion
http://groups.google.com/groups?group=microsoft.public.msn.discussion

Now good luck!
