Question ID: 220662
Hello,

We are managing www.besthotels.com. Today the DNS is simply forwarding
the URL to http://www.travelnow.com/index.jsp?locale=en&geoCountry=US&currencyCode=USD&cid=59056

We are looking for a solution that, whithout changing something on
www.TravelNow.com side, we can keep the BESTHOTELS.COM domain in the
root of the URL.

the result of the redirect, and following clicks should look like:

http://www.besthotels.com/index.jsp?locale=en&geoCountry=US&currencyCode=USD&cid=59056

How can I achieve this? I have servers for DNS, web etc... at my
disposal.

Thank you in advance,
Kris

Are you running on a Windows or Linux/Unix machine?

If you're running on the latter, I believe I have a workable solution for you.

Actually my original clarification request dealt with modifying the
.htaccess file in your site's root directory, but in testing my theory
on my own systems, it's not going to work like I thought.

The easiest way for you to do this in my opinion, is to use frames.
You might also find someone who could accomplish this using
javascript, but that type of programming goes beyond what I'm capable
of.

If you like the frames solution, let me know and I'll provide the
programming for you...

Hello Mosquitohawk-ga,

I just would like a simple solution to make some of the TravelNow
url's invisible. By using frames, it seems you still see the
redirection below in the navigators browser.

I will see if there are other suggestions for answers open.

Thank you very much,
Kris

What type of web server are you using (Apache, IIS, ....)

Clarification of Question by kris4884-ga on 24 Jun 2003 07:46 PDT
Besthotels does not run on any web-server now. It is just redirected
to www.travelnow.com on servers on which I do not have the control.

I have at my disposal both Linux and IIS servers running other
applications (if that is your question).

Tks

It's unlikely you'll be able to do this without rewriting the URL
every time in a Javascript of some sort, and even then it may not even
work. You really need control over travelnow to make it look like
besthotels.

Arimathea is correct. You would need to mask the URL on your side. I
am almost 100% sure Javascript does not have access to write to the
location bar. Since you don't have access to the TravelNow server, you
will only be able to do what you are seeking by using frames ;-)

Hi kris

Well the first thing u need to do on the www.besthotels.com whitch u
have register to: (http://www.gandi.net) tell them... (thats if! you
dont have DNS access to your DNS Name servers FULL1.GANDI.NET and
FULL2.GANDI.NET)whitch are your name servers for only! for
www.besthotels.com. This the only place u need to work with right now.
and Tell them...

"To please add 66.119.14.251 as your "WWW" and "http" in your DNS
records For your site www.besthotels.com"

Thats the first part.

2. ok forget about the adress issue
http://www.travelnow.com/index.jsp?locale=en&geoCountry=US&currencyCode=USD&cid=59056

since what u really needed was the servers ip adress that is hosting
both sites
Travelnow.com and Besthotels.com with is 66.119.14.251 for both
domains right?

now the problem falls here u need to setup the hosting webserver
66.119.14.251 for "running multiple domains" from one server.

since u have" http://www.travelnow.com/index.jsp?locale=en&geoCountry=US&currencyCode=USD&cid=59056

this would fall as:
http://66.119.14.251/index.jsp?locale=en&geoCountry=US&currencyCode=USD&cid=59056
as your main site since u made this the index file for Besthotels.com
so ull need to change the name of this file and make it an index file
on a separe folder and configure your IIS for like i said "running
multiple domains" with one host server once u done this on IIS and the
the right path to each of the folders for both sites but always leave
the main site u want on the Inetpub/www folder and make another folder
for Inetpub/www/besthotels.com/ and put that site stuff in there so
its all a question of setting up "multiple domains" from your hosting
server and asking http://www.gandi.net to update your DNS records for
this host server if u can get access since its the server u upload
your site content to im sure u can since u are doing the site so u do
have acess to this place this is why-

www.besthotels.com - no host running only DNS server

Domain Name: BESTHOTELS.COM
   Registrar: GANDI
   Whois Server: whois.gandi.net
   Referral URL: http://www.gandi.net
   Name Server: FULL1.GANDI.NET
   Name Server: FULL2.GANDI.NET
   Status: ACTIVE
   Updated Date: 15-jun-2003
   Creation Date: 18-apr-1996
   Expiration Date: 19-apr-2008

www.TravelNow.com -yes is being hosted by a server witch is
66.119.14.251

Domain Name: TRAVELNOW.COM
   Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
   Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
   Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
   Name Server: NS3.TRAVELNOW.COM
   Name Server: NS4.TRAVELNOW.COM
   Status: ACTIVE
   Updated Date: 21-mar-2002
   Creation Date: 19-apr-1995
   Expiration Date: 20-apr-2008

now this is already setup for TRAVELNOW.com ONLY! so dont worry about
these DNS name servers BESTHOTELS.COM DNS records are not on those
servers so dont waste your time calling network solucion to help u
they already hosting the site and the dns records are strait for
Travelnow.com so just keep working on Besthotels.com and dont do the
flames java linking thats a waste of time i think u got everything u
need if u still unsure plz let me know

keep it real!
